"Close-Up" is another very good one. The story behind is just as great. Kinda similar to "The Battle of Algiers", but goes even further with a re-creation, which must have been REAL awkward for those involved. That's usually the one held up as his best. I've not seen that yet. I really liked his final film, the experimental/non-narrative 24 Frames. I'll add it to my watch-list. Thanks!

I am amazed when someone comes up with a Top 100 or 500 and they are actually ranked by number. What’s the difference between number 157 and 158, I wonder. Anyhow, being a list maker myself, several years ago (the latest film is from 2014), I tried to put together a Top All-Time Ranking using my list of individual decades’ top films. Here is the unsatisfying result, a very (emphasis on “very”) loosely ranked Top 50. Titles are more in tiers than in a strict ranking order. Someday I will have to perform a do-over bringing it up to date, but I don’t have time for a major revision at the moment.
Ikiru (1952) / Akira Kurosawa Vertigo (1958) / Alfred Hitchcock 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) / Stanley Kubrick The Maltese Falcon (1941) / John Huston The Godfather (1972) And The Godfather: Part II (1974) / Francis Ford Coppola Da Hong Deng Long Gao Gao Gua (1991) (Raise The Red Lantern) / Yimou Zhang Memento (2000) / Christopher Nolan La Passion De Jeanne D'arc (1928) (The Passion Of Joan Of Arc) / Carl Theodor Dreyer Chinatown (1974) / Roman Polanski Psycho (1960) / Alfred Hitchcock The Best Years Of Our Lives (1946) / William Wyler Babettes Gæstebud (1987) (Babette's Feast) / Gabriel Axel Ace In The Hole (1951) / Billy Wilder The General (1926) / Buster Keaton King Kong (1933) / Merian C. I am amazed when someone comes up with a Top 100 or 500 and they are actually ranked by number. What’s the difference between number 157 and 158, I wonder. Yes, after a Top 10 or so, it seems pretty pointless to rank them. I just did it for fun, but the order is pretty arbitrary (even after the Top 5, which themselves are pretty solid, but even their order could change depending on day/mood). I think sdrew13163 has the right idea, just listing them chronologically after the initial best of the best tier. Nice list BTW, we share a few favorites.

Currently at the intermission point in Lawrence Of Arabia. If the second half is half as good as the first, then the above list will change. Did you finish it? What did you think? Edit: ignore post, I see you've answered it in anther thread.

The one fantastic thing about being in self-isolation is that I've been able to watch more movies over the past month or so than I have in the past few years combined. It has been great to watch (and re-watch) some classics that I haven't seen in years. With that being said, I'd love to see some Top 50 (or 100) all-time lists. Perhaps there are films I'm missing out on that I need to check out! Here's my Top 50... #1) The Godfather: Part 2 | Francis Ford Coppola #2) 2001: A Space Odyssey | Stanley Kubrick #3) Apocalypse Now | Francis Ford Coppola #4) The Godfather | Francis Ford Coppola #5) Taxi Driver | Martin Scorsese #6) One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest | Milos Forman #7) Barry Lyndon | Stanley Kubrick #8) Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb | Stanley Kubrick #9) Chinatown | Roman Polanski #10) Network | Sidney Lumet#11) The French Connection | William Friedkin #12) The Deer Hunter | Michael Cimino #13) A Clockwork Orange | Stanley Kubrick #14) Raging Bull | Martin Scorsese #15) On The Waterfront | Elia Kazan #16) Alien | Ridley Scott #17) The Empire Strikes Back | Irvin Kershner #18) 12 Angry Men | Sidney Lumet #19) Nashville | Robert Altman #20) Goodfellas | Martin Scorsese#21) The Departed | Martin Scorsese#22) Deliverance | John Boorman #23) Dog Day Afternoon | Sidney Lumet #24) Citizen Kane | Orson Welles #25) The Shining | Stanley Kubrick #26) The Sting | George Roy Hill #27) Jaws | Steven Spielberg #28) Fargo | Joel Coen #29) Patton | Franklin J. Schaffner #30) The Irishman | Martin Scorsese
#31) Million Dollar Baby | Clint Eastwood #32) The Silence Of The Lambs | Jonathan Demme #33) The Exorcist | William Friedkin #34) The Bridge On The River Kwai | David Lean #35) JFK | Oliver Stone #36) Sideways | Alexander Payne #37) The Thing | John Carpenter #38) No Country For Old Men | Ethan Coen & Joel Coen #39) Halloween | John Carpenter #40) Pulp Fiction | Quentin Tarantino
#41) Kill Bill: Volume 1 | Quentin Tarantino #42) The Shawshank Redemption | Frank Darabont #43) There Will Be Blood | Paul Thomas Anderson #44) Blood Simple | Joel Coen #45) Toy Story | John Lasseter #46) Amadeus | Milos Forman #47) Star Wars | George Lucas #48) Adventureland | Greg Mottola #49) Scream | Wes Craven #50) Wild Strawberries | Ingmar BergmanCurrently at the intermission point in Lawrence Of Arabia. If the second half is half as good as the first, then the above list will change. Your list and AFI's list look a lot alike.

Well this is my 60 plus favorites list. I find some movies I may really really like and yet not watch them often, while some movies further down my favorites list I may watch more so go figure. So King Kong and Jason and the Argonauts would be big favorites and if you asked me to name my favorites they may be at top, yet I may not watch them as often as something like Night of the Demon, Race With the Devil, or Frogs or Rituals or Horror Express, which I may watch every year. I watched Without Warning again recently and thought--this isn't on my favorites list! I needed to add it. It doesn't follow any particular order after the first 10 or so.
