So I'm watching the films in chronological order every Saturday during this pandemic. I just watched Episode IV (the original) this last weekend. I play the movies pretty loud on my home theatre surround sound setup, and I noticed how much better the main theme sounded in the 77 film than it did for the prequels. Something about the separation of sound that the aggressiveness of it. I can't really explain it.
I've read that the main theme was recorded for each film in the original trilogy, but only recorded once for the prequels and re-used for each film's crawl. I'm not sure how it works for the sequel films.
Anyway, with how many times I've watched these movies, it's just odd that this is the first time I've noticed this.

I agree & have noticed it for years. Though I've always just chalked it up to the audio tech of each film being unique. To that point, most of the audio for home DVD/Blu OT has sounded merely boosted, but thankfully unaltered. Laser blasts in ANH do tend to sound a little different from ESB & ROTJ respectively.
DVD/Blu releases have been transfers of the originals, naturally, whereas the prequels were untouched for home release. I'm sure if they could've done it on the cheap, the entire sound effects & audio would've been aligned with the PT. It's far more obvious with the 21st Century Fox logos before IV-VI, each their own sound as well.
