I caught NFL Network's Top 10 Devastating Losses last night... & for me it's a gaffe...

1. Superbowl 42? (Pats lose to Giants)
2. The Drive/The Fumble 1986 & 1987 AFC Championships - (Browns lose to Broncos X2)
3. Wide Right Superbowl 25 - (Bills lose to Giants)
4. Superbowl 43 - (Cards lose to Steelers)………………………………..I call bs, that was arguably the best performance by a losing SB team - pick 6 & clutch catch did them.
5. Superbowl 49 - (Seahawks lose to Patriots)
6. The Comeback - 1992 AFC wild Card round: (Oilers lose to Bills)
7. Rodgers-Packers - Seahawks steal it.
8. Farve's NFC Championship Picks (Pack lose to Giants in 07, Vikings lose to Saints in 09)
9. Tuck Rule 2001 AFC Divisional round (Raiders lose to Pats)
10.2002 NFC Championship (Eagles lose to Bucs)…………………...no one truly cares.


I'd go:

1. Wide Right - Scott Norwood, 0-4 Bills, Brett Hull, Music City Miracle... the city of Buffalo, the Bills organization, that loss was everything.

2. The Drive/The Fumble - Browns not only never rebounded, they left the city. Still scarred from all that.

3. 28-3 - Julio Jones' symphonic catch should've been the dagger. Falcons with the ultimate self-destruction. Giving up two 2pt conversions no less.

4. Malcolm Butler - Beastmode on the 1 after he'd nearly got in the previous play, dynasty path in the making. Worst play call in NFL history. Period.

5. Helmet Catch - This is lower for me because the Patriots had already won 3 titles, & were going to win another 3 out of 5 titles. Sure they missed the perfect season... having to settle for the greatest coach, greatest QB, & greatest NFL dynasty is not the most devastating echo.  This reminds me of the 73 win Warriors.  It's something but it's not as much of something as non-fans want it to be.

6. The Comeback - Houston Oilers left town. Losing to Frank Reich with all due respect was utterly inexcusable.

7. Gary Anderson - Some ppl on their list called out this omission. Those Vikings were top 10 all-time until that choke. Bad vibes rue that franchise.

8. Favre's Conference Picks - killed those Packers & those Vikings. Unreal.

9. 1990-91 NFC title game - Joe Montana era gets smacked shut by the clutch Giants. Threepeat gone, Joe's starting job gone, one of the greatest teams not to close.

10.Tuck Rule - This one's weird because the rule had been called against the Patriots that same season. The Raiders would make the following Super Bowl. I guess the Raiders though never fully recovered.

18-1 has to be higher.  Your supporting argument is valid, in a broader context things turned out ok for Patriots fans.  But in the moment, I can't think of a worse loss.  I'm sure the Raiders blame the Tuck Rule for their loss to the Bucs, too.  Ever see the 'NFL's Greatest Games' episode on the Snow Bowl (aka Tuck Rule game)?  The Raiders whine in interviews and it shows why they never won anything.  All they do is make excuses and say things like, "We knew we were going to lose."  Well, that explains why you lost.  Luckily for us, the Patriots never seem to know when they're going to lose.   

There's a great video on the Tuck Rule, which explains how frequently it was officiated identically, even earlier that very year.  Raiders fans, Pats haters and crybabies everywhere need to watch it and shut the fuck up.  That game is my favorite Patriots game of all time, even better than the Super Bowls that followed.  Snow, an epic comeback, an impossible kick and the greatest final game ever played in a home stadium.  'Game manager' Brady was 32-52 for 312 yds, a pick and a rushing TD in that game, but I digress.

Funny how my favorite and least favorite football games are both on your list.      

  

Top 10 Underrated Days of the year. This isn't about holidays, they usually get their due. Only two actual holidays make the list for me, and it's not for the reasons usually associated with those days.

1. The Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend - The Saturday of any three day weekend is pretty good regardless, but let's face it, a three day weekend in May compared to January or even August is really not much of a debate. The weather is perfect, and everyone is getting together for BBQ, picnics, etc. for the first time in months. Just a great feeling to that day.

2. Wednesday before Thanksgiving - Your mileage may vary on this pick-- literally, depending how far you have to travel-- but it's all about the anticipation. Even if you're working, you're probably half-assing it, looking forward to the three Fs of Turkey Day: Food, football and family (let's be honest, in that order). Food prep with one of your favorite movies on in the background. It's the calm before the storm of the holidays, there's an agenda but at this point it's all yours.

3. First Saturday in September - As big a college football fan as I am, this isn't really about that. It's more about that feeling you get when Fall comes around. Labor Day weekend is like a celebration of Summer and Fall at the same time, and does it really get any better than that? The weather is still warm, but you can smell Fall in the air. Literally, you can. (Much like snow has a smell, you can smell it in the air before the precipitation arrives-- some of you that live in the north are nodding your heads, the rest of you haven't experienced life.) From here to New Years it's all holidays and football, and I don't think there's a better time of year.

4. Columbus Day - The second best three day weekend of the year as far as I'm concerned, (and not underrated for Canadians, as it's their Thanksgiving). There aren't many traditions associated with this holiday (other than the debate over how offensive calling it Columbus Day is to indigenous peoples) on a national scale, but it's probably the best hiking day of the year. Some years the foliage is a bit past peak, but you can't beat the weather for hiking.

5. July 3 - Neighborhood fireworks are going off (and quite possibly the town fireworks if you don't live in a big city), grills are going and it's high Summer. The Fourth is one of the best holidays no matter how patriotic you are because there isn't much of an agenda. It's just grilling and chilling, and it all starts on the 3rd because most people have the next day off.

6. St. Patrick's Day - More specifically for me, the day of the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Parade. The parade is fine, but we don't always attend despite it being about ten minutes away. To me it's more about the signal that Spring is right around the corner. It's still going to snow (did I mention it snowed at our place two weeks ago?), but it's not going to last. The warm weather is on the way after another long New England winter.

7. Last Day before Christmas Vacation - Much like #2 on this list, this is about the anticipation of the holiday. Hopefully you have your shopping done by now and it's all smooth sailing and bowl games. You can really revel in that holiday feeling and soak it in before it passes you by. (This probably means a little more to you if you have young kids, but everyone enjoys the holidays.)

8. Black Friday - This is another one of those fun 'in between' type days as you're still in Thanksgiving/fall mode but gearing up for Winter/Christmas at the same time. Plus (with any luck), your guests have all gone home (or you have) and you can relax and chow down on leftovers without having to converse with anyone's crazy uncle. Unless you're the crazy uncle, then you can talk to yourself without anyone bothering you. You can even embrace the shopping chaos (wonder how that'll go this year?), though I avoid that at all costs.

9. Good Friday - I've really gotten into GF as the beginning of yard work season rather than any religious association. See, I love yard work. I'm funny like that. And since it usually takes place in early April, the conditions are ideal. A little chilly, the weeds haven't started growing yet, and you're just excited to be outside. Doesn't hurt that it's the rare early start of a three day weekend.

10. First Day of Winter - Ok, Winter is a bummer, and this calendar start of the season is often overlooked because it's so close to Christmas (and quite possible the same day as #7 on this list). But look at it this way: Even if you hate Winter (I like snow, but I never got into skiing, which is odd for a New Englander), so I tend to get bored once the holidays go by. So much darkness, without much to do outside. But hey- even though it's technically the beginning of Winter, the solstice means the days are actually getting longer! You're halfway home already, it's the only way to think if you're going to survive the next two months.

Ha, I left at noon on Friday. I went with Saturday because you can chill the whole day.      

To be honest, I don't know much about Nowell, other than the fact that he ODed.  40 oz is fucking awesome though.  

1. January 2nd.  Western civilization has switched on Christmas the day after Labour Day.  By the end of November I'm already tapped out.  The only solace is family right around Christmas Eve/Day & Boxing Day.  January 2nd is like losing 25lbs of mental baggage without even trying.

2. Daylight savings Spring ahead.  What can I say, that's my unofficial new year.  Days get a little bit longer & warmer for weeks & weeks.  

3. July 1 Canada Day.  Not sure about July 4th, but this one's gained some major Christmas Day in July spirit the past 10-15yrs or so.  No other holiday is so literally all about doing absolutely nothing but partying outside if you feel like it, & fireworks.  Some holidays can be a chore, not this one.

4. February 3rd or so.  When Canada begins having more minutes of daylight than not.  

5. May 1.  My favourite month of the year.

6. Halloween.  Of the commercial holidays, this one is underrated because November is all but a dead zone.  I don't really like fall until it stops teasing summer's end either.  

7. First day of Winter.  Fall scuks, it blows.  Wet & dark.  Bring on renewal.  Snow covered lawns look better at night than muddy leaves.

8. Christmas Eve.  Running out of underrateds, but Eve still delivers a nostalgic buzz of yore.  

9. Easter.  I like how it pops up at a different time each year.  

10.June 1.  Summer getting into full gear.
