I made my first digital purchase recently. Moved to a new place, had to get my own Amazon now. This was the first movie I bought. Loved it as a kid, still love it now. It's a great physical comedy with some fucking hilarious adult humor I picked up on when I was older. The jokes in this movie put me in tears. The action is really good too, LOL! It's kind of a perfect "adventure" movie with excellent characters.

About six months ago. One of my favorite 80s films.

I saw it the first time earlier this year. I think it held up well.

I liked it in the 80s but it doesn't hold up for me now.

It's been a long time, but I like this movie quite a bit. Big fan of Joe Dante, it's a shame he pretty much disappeared after the 80s.

You see it in sports sometimes too, but sometimes actots/directors fall out of favor for virtually no reason (or something minor like a single failure). But the guy had a bit of a run in the with Gremlins, Gremlins 2, The Explorers, The Burbs, and from what I'm reading of reviews Matinee (which I want to see now). He still made the occasional movie after that, but it was like every 3-5 years.

Definitely check out Matinee, it's wonderful. If you have any knowledge of the Cuban missile crisis, old schlock horror matinees of the late 50s-early 60s, the movie is a pure love letter to that period. And the movie within a movie, MANT!, is something I would have loved to seen turned into a real thing.

I love Piranha - 78', yet just can't really get into The Howling - 80'. As with The 'Burbs 89', I found it way too outlandish and weird in tone and it just didn't really connect with me.
Gremlins - 84' is top notch, thanks to Spielberg, so Dante can't take all the credit here and Innerspace - 87' is nifty, (another Spielberg Presents), yet when left to his own devises, he tended to lose his way. I can barely recall Matinee' - 93' and I dislike Small Soldiers - 97'. The kid was awful in it and like The 'Burbs, I struggle to get into it.
I might add, I do like Explorers -85' for some reason, but that was a flop for Dante, but I don't see it as a misfire. It had charm, magic, warmth and a fine sense of wonderment all bound up with beautiful and relevant visual effects that weren't overdone and all fitted in perfectly with the tone of the film.

I've always felt like it could have taken place in the same universe as Back to the Future for some reason.

Just a few months ago. I love it and have the DVD, which I rewatch about once a year.

The early 90s I guess.
Robert Picardo does a very good Martin Short impression but I hardly remember the story after the cowboy scene.

That was the first time I watched it all the way through. It use to play on TV and I would watch it from whatever random point in the movie it was.
I have to admit that I am not much of a fan.

I never really got the Martin Short shtick thing and Dennis Quaid was never able to quite break into the mega star mould which it appeared he was being groomed for yet didn’t work out. He wasn’t born to be one. This was another of many of Quaid’s flops. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad film and I find they both work in quite well with each other and of course the fantastic journey aspect of the film is well rendered.

I watched it for the first time and, so far, the only time back in 2017 as I was going through the '80s in movies and TV shows. I had bought it on Blu-ray. I enjoyed it for the most part, though I had problems with the part where Dennis Quaid's character gets passed from the man to the woman and he finds his way into her uterus to see her developing child. It was nice concept, but the whole sequence just didn't make sense to me.

I agree with the parts I put in bold. His last movie that most people have heard of was Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) and his 2 movies since then are even worse, though The Hole starts off interestingly.

I also forgot to mention I also prefer Dante's segment in Twilight Zone: The Movie - 83' over the others. It was wacky and creepy both at the same time and visually strong with terrific lighting and atmosphere. Then again, Spielberg had much input on this film as well. George Miller's final segment is still tops too though and I even like Landis's prologue and first segment. Spielberg felt he had to change his due to the tragic accident on Landis's set to give the audience something more whimsical amongst the darker tone of the others.
