Another The Man Who... with Boris Karloff. An excellent film tells the tale of Dr. Laurience (Karloff) . Once-a respectable scientist however the science community has rejected the Dr's latest out-there theories. So in the Lab of an isolated manor house Laurience carries on with his secretive research/experiments into the origins of the mind and soul, he is aided by a promising young surgeon Clare Wyatt (Anna Lee) and wheelchair bound assistant Clayton (Donald Calthrop). The Man Who Changed His Mind (1936) UK Dir. Robert Stevenson

The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932) directed by Charles Brabin. Interesting to note the controversy that this pre-code film generated, During its initial release the film was criticized by the Chinese government, and the Chinese embassy in Washington launched a formal complaint for the hostile depiction of the Chinese ! The film's depictions of violence and sexuality still caused an uproar in the 70s coinciding with a re-release The Japanese American Citizen"s League stated that "the movie was offensive and demeaning to Asian-Americans". Scenes with offensive dialogue were cut but these have since been restored. In the lab Boris Karloff as Dr. Fu Manchu mixes up his secret serums

Gold (1934) German science fiction film directed by Karl Hartl. Scientist Werner Holk (Hans Albers) aids the visionary Professor Achenbach (Friedrich Kayßler) in testing an electric atom smasher. Their lab experiments aim to turn lead into gold. Following an explosion of the ‘Atomic Fracturer’ the old professor and many others are killed and their work is discredited. Holk barely survives, some months late he is contacted by two shady agents for the wealthy Englishman John Wills. The tycoon is conducting similar lab experiments, Holk now realizes that their experiment had been sabotaged… Gold was an expensive production that took fifteen months to complete The enormous main set for the ‘atomic fracturing’ machine built was designed by Otto Hunte and Günther Rittauboth, both were involved in the special effects for Metropolis, their impressive set here is very much in the same style. The special effects create a sensational science fiction atmosphere as millions of volts of electricity are harnessed to transmute lead into Gold. The enormous apparatus is suspended on gigantic porcelain insulators, housing giant glass tubes that buzz with an electrifying charge, bolts of electricity flashing like crazy arc between them. In truly spectacular style the dynamic special effects of this science lab are an exciting edge of the seat experience, an extraordinary achievement in 1930s Sci-Fi classic cinema…
