What do you think about the practice of someone taking a 35mm film and having a telecine scan done of it, then releasing it as a bootleg online?
There are two notable examples of this.
One is the Unaltered Trilogy project--I read that for some of the re-creation of the films, they used 35mm SW movies that people owned and did scans to get better image quality.
Another is SONG OF THE SOUTH--someone with a 35mm print of the film (liked to know where they got it) from its last release (1980s) had it scanned to digital. The quality is reported to be superb (the only other available version was a Japanese laserdisc).
Do you consider this an act of piracy or film preservation (since in both cases, it seems unlikely the original films would be made available)?

Technically that is piracy if they are doing it without the consent of Disney.
It isn't a matter of opinion.
The opinion is whether it is objectionable or not. I have no objection to it.

The way I see it... if the legitimate way of obtaining a movie is difficult to impossible (like if it's not available on DVD format or newer (since anything pre-DVD is pretty much ancient and crap quality), that basically makes pirating the only way one can see it.

RiP, IMDbWell if something is available through download and there is no legit way (within reason) to get it, what can one really do? it might not be the optimal situation but it's not the end of the world either p.s. some things are somewhat of a grey-area in life ; although if you want to look at it from religious angle... then things are either right or wrong (even assuming I was on the wrong side in this situation, it would be more of a minimal offense). either way, Catholic or not. we are all sinners on some level and we try to keep sin at a minimum as I figure at the very least one should try avoiding the reg flag (i.e. mortal sin) stuff and it's pretty safe to say this would be no where near a mortal sin (assuming it's wrong in the first place). basically even if I was wrong here, it would definitely be more of the venial sin(mild sin) territory since the damage, if any, would be minimal. so I guess if one wants to take the extra safe/conservative approach on this topic... then don't do it
