Before it was officially announced that Bane and Catwoman would be in the movie, how did you imagine that the sequel to TDK would’ve been like? In particular, who did you expect the villain(s) to be?

I, like I think most people, expected the villain to surely be The Riddler. That's what I remember everyone talking about at the time.

Riddler or I remember a rumor about Philip Seymour Hoffman playing an arms dealer version of Penguin.

Yup everyone thought it would be Riddler. I still think Nolan only chose Bane to subvert expectations. He wanted to do what nobody thought he would do and nail it. And he almost did.

The explanation he gave for choosing Bane was that he wanted a villain who could pose a physical challenge to Batman.

As others mentioned, I thought for sure Nolan was going with the Riddler (with Leonardo Dicaprio in the role having them coming hot off the success of Inception). But I was overly satisfied with how TDKR turned out (all things considered of course). Batman needed to face off against a physical freak/imposing villain this time around.

I don’t think that would’ve worked, for a variety of reasons, though I have always said that if they used Hush for the Snyderverse, Matt Damon would’ve been perfect.

I thought it'd be Riddler, too. I'm glad they didn't go with that, though. I'm not a huge fan of the Riddler.

I didn't really have any expectations. I remember everyone was predicting Riddler or Black Mask. I think I leaned more Black Mask, given the first two films' preponderance of mob bosses, and the fact that Riddler predictions seemed based on "well, Ledger died and Riddler is the next best thing", which isn't Nolan's style.

I didn't imagine anything, but I did hope that Batman will be redeemed. I also remember some fan-casting ideas like Robin Williams as Hugo Strange and Philip Seymour Hoffman as the Penguin.

There was a pretty great fan trailer of Williams as Strange, it is a pity he never played a Batman villain - it was an aspiration of his. Same with Hoffman as The Penguin, he would've been brilliant.

For me everything pointed to Two-Face returning as the main villain.
Mainly because we didn't get enough of him during 'The Dark Knight' and he was effectively the only one that could clear Batman of his supposed murders. I know Nolan nixed this pretty early on, but I refused to believe it until Bane was officially announced.

I think I expected The Riddler in the third one. I never dreamed Nolan would touch The Catwoman...but he did...sorta anyway.
