Big fan of Evelyn Waugh. Graham Greene is worth a read too.
Don’t forget PG Wodehouse.

I'm fond of the gothic lit.
Dracula, Carmilla, and Varney.

I like how they wrote stories and the characters they created. I could never get into Hardy. All his characters seemed so endlessly glum. Even poor Bathsheba ended up with "The most private, secret, plainest wedding that it is possible to have." And George Elliot drowned the lovers at the end of The Mill on the Floss. I liked Anthony Trollope, who clearly liked all his characters even Mrs Proudie and the Bishop. And G A Henty, Talbot Baines Reed and Conan Doyle's (although I admit that by dying in 1930, it was a bit of a stretch to call the latter a Victorian) seemed to get up and do, rather than sitting on their arses and waiting on events.

Didn't like Hardy until I read Jude the Obscure. We had done 2 novels in school (Mayor and Tess)and didn't really like either of them. But Jude!!! Also on my fave list: far from the madding crowd, the "creepy" well-beloved. When I have time I'll re-read the others although I have read most of his work.

I just finished Jude the Obscure a couple of days ago... beautiful book. It's the first from Hardy I have read but I have Far from the Madding Crowd on my Kindle and will tackle it soon. My favourite British novelist? Possibly Graham Greene although I have so far only read a few of his books. Among more contemporary British writers I particularly love Sebastian Faulks... and Terry Pratchett!

Why is John Fowles no longer popular? 50 years ago he would be the first writer mentioned in a topic like this. Three of his novels made into films. His works spawned controversy andthe debate but no longer. Was his style just of the times? A fashion icon which has moved on to the latest one?

I loved The French Lieutenant's Wife, and the film with Meryl Streep was good. The Magus was also an interesting read.

One of my favorite authors is British, she's a modern author and writes the Ruth Galloway series and the Magic Men series and some stand alone. I know she is not considered a "great" author but I enjoy her books. Oops! Her pen name is Elly Griffiths, she has written a few books under her real name of Domenica De Rosa. I also loved the cozy mysteries by the late M.C. Beaton, I was very sad when she died last year. Her last Hamish Macbeth and Agatha Raisen books will still be published, I have them on pre order from Amazon UK. I must not forget J.K. Rowlings. I like many of the authors mentioned above but the ones I have just mentioned are the ones I read over and over again because they relax me and bring a smile to my face. I no longer want to read the "heavy" stuff, my brain is getting too old.

I haven't read Alexander McCall Smith's books but I am aware of them, maybe I'll try to buy some from Thrift books - I love that quote " Too many books, too little time" that's me, there is so much I want to read but time is running out.
