My laptop is slow and I'm tired of accidentally clicking on it instead of whichever thread I meant to click when it finally decides to load itself. I could pay, but I'd rather not, and my adblockers do nothing to get rid of it.
More altruistically, if I do have to pay, is there a way to pay on behalf of the forum itself so nobody has to see it?
Thanks.

is there a way to get rid of that $2.99/month banner? Yes, there is: Pay $2.99/month. You could do that, too, but it's really not worth it. You get so many page loads per dollar and it doesn't last long. Someone once paid for 50k page views, and it lasted about 8 hours. Stand by for mslo to come in and tell you all about how to install ad blockers and fortify your devices as if they had the Hope Diamond in them.

Like two people mentioned above... uBlock Origin (by Raymond Hill) is what you want to install as it cleans up A LOT of junk no one wants to see online in general. the internet would suck without it. some tips... once you install uBlock Origin I would suggest you use the following filters (put them in the 'My filters' section of uBlock Origin) as it cleans up all of the junk on these IMDB2 forums... IMDB2.freeforums.net##.c-pb-plus__container IMDB2.freeforums.net##div[id*="-banner"] IMDB2.freeforums.net##div[id*="overlay"] IMDB2.freeforums.net###remove_ads_link IMDB2.freeforums.net###ad1 IMDB2.freeforums.net###wrapper > div:nth-of-type(5) IMPORTANT NOTE: change the capital letters on the 'IMDB2' part in each line above back to lower case otherwise those filters won't work!!! (NOTE: when I typed them lower case these forums automatically capitalize the letters which is why you have to manually adjust it.)
hell, what I usually do is since Firefox is my primary browser I make that one more security hardened but it's more likely to break some websites (since I am not using uBlock Origin in it's default state as I got it blocking '3rd party frames' etc (but uBlock Origin in it's default state seems to strike a good balance between ad-filtering but not breaking websites) and then on the occasion I need to do a bit more sensitive stuff online (like ordering something or banking etc) ill load up Chrome which has NO ad-blocker installed on it (although I do get some level of ad-filtering because everything on my network is running through Pi-Hole which gives a decent level of ad-filtering without a person having to install anything on their computer/device) and just use it to do something quick. but I got both of my browsers in a sandbox. so if something shady does manage to slip by the browser it's limited on what it can do since the sandbox will likely stop it etc.
Exactly
how anyone uses the internet without some level of ad/junk filtering is beyond me since it's easy enough to install and largely stays out of ones way in it's default state. so it's largely a install and forget about it sort of thing.
even that aside, another reason to use ad-blockers... it's possible to get infected with a virus etc just from visiting a website that displays rouge ads. like in the past it's happened on a legitimate website where some shady ads slipped through etc. here is a article on it... www.cnbc.com/2014/05/20/beware-of-malicious-ads-that-can-harm-computers-without-a-click.html ; I would imagine if one keeps their browser and OS up to date it should keep the risk minimal but I figure why take a chance.
p.s. but since the admin brought the 'fortifying your devices' comment... if your (the OP) not already doing it I strongly recommend you use a password manager for managing multiple accounts online as those who don't use this and use the same crappy password for each and every account they have is risking having some shady person take over their online life since if a person gets a hold of your password they can potentially take over your other accounts (which won't happen if your using a password manager (and I am assuming your computer is free from any viruses etc in the first place)). you definitely don't want someone getting a hold of your email as they can use that to reset passwords for other accounts etc. so in short... use a password manager which can generate long/random/secure passwords for each website you use and setup a good master password on the password manager (I suggest using something like Diceware). but if you do this... make sure to backup your password managers database file as if you lose that it's going to be a huge problem getting back into your accounts online so make sure to make multiple backup copies of it. so this way even if your computer blows up, you still got a backup of the password managers database file. all of what I said is 100% free short of the Diceware which is free if you have at least one dice (although I recommend five dice since it speeds up the process). but these are dirt cheap (i.e. $3-ish tops).
Which is why that's basically a insult to the person expected to shell out $ for removing ads since the cost is way to high for something that expires very quickly.

Here's an actual tip from Diceware: "make sure you are alone and close the curtains. Write on a hard surface – not on a pad of paper. After you memorize your passphrase, burn your notes, pulverize the ashes and flush them down the toilet." They're harmless ads that pay for the service you use for free. Do you really think all that is necessary? I don't know how much it cost, but $3 a month seems more like a tip than a charge.

That quote is obviously joking. OR... assumes extreme situations which pretty much anyone reading this would not have to worry about. but that's no reason to write off using Diceware since the math behind it is sound (you don't have to take my word for it either as you can do a little re-search if you want as websites talk about it being a good way to make a secure passwords) as it guarantees truly random passwords/passphrases that are resistant to brute forcing etc. but seriously... the math behind Diceware guarantees secure passwords as long as your password is long enough. they generally recommend at least six Diceware words to be pretty secure which is why rolling dice is needed since it's truly random unlike if someone was just to pick a small amount of words they like from the Diceware word list which would not be truly random which is why rolling dice guarantees it is truly random so no one can guess what the person is using etc. the Diceware word list (i.e. www.eff.org/files/2016/07/18/eff_large_wordlist.txt ) contains 7776 words which covers all possible combinations of what a person could roll with 5 dice (or one dice rolled five times) at once since it gives you a 5 digit number and the number you get from rolling the five dice, reading from say left to right (or right to left) in front of you and then you simply search that text file for your number and that's your first word. then do it however many times you need to get the desired amount of words in your passphrase for which you can use to secure your password manager. but in short... I would say Diceware is best for generating a secure password which is then used for ones password managers 'master password'. that's the general idea in a sentence or so as all you got to do is remember that 'master password' and then ones password manager can generate long/complex/hard to remember passwords for each site you log into which makes you much more secure and you don't have to remember those, just the master password to your password manager. I edited my initial post mentioning it's possible one can get shady stuff on their system just from visiting a legitimate website that's serving rogue ads. so on the side of caution... I figure why risk ads when installing uBlock Origin is simple enough and works well in it's default state and not to mention cleans up a lot of junk on random websites. so there is far more in favor in using uBlock Origin than against it and it only takes minimum effort to install. so while what I personally do (like sandbox and further tweaks to uBlock Origin etc) might be a little overkill for the average person. using a password manager is definitely not as it should be required for anyone who's half way decently security conscious online as I don't think people realize how vulnerable they are until they get burned from using some very weak password which people surprisingly do. but as usual I am sure it comes back to laziness as some people can't even take a minimum level of security measures online and then they flip out when they get burned. but this also plays inline with backups of ones important data as many slack off on this to and when their computers hard drive dies (or smart phone etc) out of no where they panic and it's generally too late at that point, there data is gone.
hell, here is some good advice which could help some people... when it comes to Phishing, people can get suckered into giving up sensitive info. but a good way around this is if one gets a email asking for them to login to update some banking info (and the things can appear fairly legit even though they are not). instead of clicking that link in the email, always manually go to your web browser and type in the address to your banking site and check from there. this way you ain't got to worry about any shady stuff posing as legitimate trying to extract sensitive info from you. hell, some years ago I was searching for something online and clicked one link and shortly after was a web page asking me to login to my ISP out-of-the-blue and I knew that was a Phishing attempt (I have not seen something like that since though).
Yeah, I realize $3 is not much. but still, just the thought of charging someone and then hours later it's loaded with ads again. no thanks also, say $5-10 don't sound like much but if a person is paying for multiple things on a monthly basis at those rates, that can add up quickly.

That quote is obviously joking. I didn't see any smiley faces. Oddly enough, the very next tip is: "If you are using a passphrase for file encryption, we recommend you keep a copy written down in a safe place." Hmm. Maybe it IS a joke. That's just what I want from a password generator.
What, no Hope Diamonds here? Pfft. I can do that with my eyes closed. Literally. Yes, that's another tip: "If you need to make up passphrases often, get a shoe box or a food storage box about the same size. Put five dice in the box, shake them up vigorously – at least ten hard shakes – and then tip the box to let all the dice slide down to one edge. Now open the box, read the dice from left to right, or front to back if a few line up. Then just look up the corresponding word list entry. Repeat this process until you have enough words for your passphrase." Believe me when I say you can't possibly imagine how hard I would laugh if your first roll was 12345. I use uBlock Origin, but it's disabled for this forum and I've never had a single issue with the ads. They have a very strict non-intrusive ad policy and they're quick to zap any violations that slip through the cracks. And besides, they're mostly just nice messages from ProBoards at the moment anyway. You can get this forum ad-free for $3/month. That you may be paying $3/month for a hundred other services does not negate that, and it certainly doesn't make it sound expensive. ProBoards is a great service and a few small images on your screen is a small price to pay. They seem to be cool with ad blockers, although they recently started employing nag screens to disable them. So while I wouldn't discourage the use of them, I won't go out of my way to convince people they're necessary here because they aren't. After all, you're providing overkill solutions for "extreme situations which pretty much anyone reading this would not have to worry about."

One could do that. but I just did mine more of a standard way... I rolled 5 dice in my hand like usual as that's what I was doing about 24 hours ago making 5 ten word passphrases which is 50 rolls of five dice. that should keep me good for a while I just rolled them out on the carpet next to my desktop computer and jotting down each 5 digit number in a text file like... 11111-11111-11111 etc. because they fell pretty randomly onto the carpet and some fell a decent distance apart etc as all I did was just read them on the carpet from left-to-right. like whichever was the furthest left on the carpet towards the right even though some where further from me and some where closer but I just gauged the left to right distance to figure out the order and it appears each and every roll came up with a different five digit number (I am not 100% on this but it appears that way quickly looking over the 50 five digit numbers. either way, it has no effect on the security of it as there is a guaranteed minimum level of entropy). Yeah, but the thing is... it would not even matter since it was a dice roll which is guaranteed random and I would still use that 12345 roll if it happened. so I can see why you laughed, but it would not change the security of your password in the slightest.
p.s. '12345' is the word 'arousal' on the Diceware word list.
I assume this is a joke comment? ; or serious? ; it's hard to make out with just text on a screen(?). Put it this way... if you start spending $100-200+ on small fee services that's not pocket change for many in a months time as it will reach a point one might opt for dumping some stuff they don't need, especially if they are already a bit low on $ to begin with. That does not apply to everything I said, just some of it but if one wants some simple advice for the common person I suggest the following two things for now... - Password Manager (this is essential security online in today's world where the average person likely has multiple accounts to keep track of and they are almost always going to use the same password for multiple accounts which is bad security. but using a password manager makes it so they only have to remember one password and the password manager generates random/very secure passwords for each site you use. just doing this makes a person noticeably more secure in their online world and it's not difficult to do even though takes a little time to initially setup but once you do it's easily worth ones time to do) - uBlock Origin (a basic install of this is not overkill at all. most people would benefit and it's easy to do) Hence, the custom filters in my initial post above Yeah, one might be perfectly okay with what your doing (especially if ones browser up to date along with the OS). but I figure why take a chance (and people in general don't like ads etc) but in the end... each person has to make their own choices

And yet it's still only $3/month. That's actually for all PB forums, not just this one. Personally, I'm fine with the ads, and if just allowing them helps fund this forum, it's the least I can do. It's one click per hour. As they put it in this post, it's a gentle encouragement to whitelist PB forums in the ad blockers that "no one will be prevented from using on any ProBoards forums." I get the impression that they didn't want to do that, but they maybe kinda had to, so they kept it to a bare minimum. So there they are, trying to keep our forums free with 'gentle encouragment', and here you are, lecturing everyone at every chance you get about the dangers of allowing a couple of small images on the forum and how to sabatoge PB's aforementioned attempts. If everyone blocked ads, this forum wouldn't be free, and thus probably non-existent.

Not really a lecture, just assistance for those who want to put in a small amount of effort to clean up these forums (so they display as they should in the first place) and I assist them, for free, in that ; basically I just gave the OP a more optimal answer is all in it will get rid of all of the annoying stuff he probably would rather not see as if he does not like that banner, chances are he would like those filters I listed for em. besides... making people more security conscious online can't be a bad thing ; whether they take that advice or not is ultimately their choice. Maybe, but at the end of the day... people don't like ads (I would rather have a nice/clean looking site instead of random annoying things that should not be there (hell, Yahoo mail is acting up lately but I only use it occasionally as a backup email anyways as they can't be trusted as ones primary email given the major Yahoo hacks some years ago now)) and it's not worth risking ones security even if the risk is not that high. besides... people pay enough just to have monthly access to the internet, we don't need to be paying additional fee's for random stuff like these forums etc. p.s. if people don't want to block ads, fine. but the internet in general would suck without some level of ad-filtering and the like in my opinion.
