I’m the last person that wants to see the World Cinema board go, but is it still viable with the amount of traffic it gets.
While a World Cinema board exists, I feel I should start any threads relating to non-English language films on that board, however I think they’d get just as many if not more responses if posted to the Film General or Classic Film boards (and therefore promote more World Cinema discussion overall). I don’t think either of those boards are so busy that World Cinema related threads would get lost/buried before people have a chance to respond to them. I also believe the communities on both those boards are open to discussing non-English language films as part of the general tapestry of their respective boards.
Interested in what the few others who use this board and users of the Film General and Classic Film boards think.
Thanks in advance for any and all constructive input.

TBH, most of my exposure to World Cinema comes in the form of older foreign films (roughly 1950s - 1980s). In the past, those titles seemed to be considered "classics" and as such, I found them freely discussed on the Classic Film Board, so I never gravitated towards this board (World Cinema) as a place to discuss them. I think if I saw a lot more foreign films that were more current (1990s and up), then yes, I'd be here discussing them, and not on the CFB.
That being said, I'd say yes, this board should still exist as a place to discuss all sorts of foreign films, irrespective of what year they were released. At the same time, I see where it's hard for many movie viewers to compartmentalize everything they want to discuss into separate board categories. I mean, if someone gets comfortable discussing older Hollywood films as well as older foreign films on, say, CFB or Film General, it may be hard to induce them to target their discussions of those films onto different, more genre-specific boards. It's almost like the way people bring up food and recipe topics on, say, the General Discussion Board, when there's a separate Food and Drink Board that technically *should* be the place for those discussions.
As to keeping this board viable... maybe one technique would be to give a mention to someone who, say, is discussing a contemporary foreign film on CFB or FG that there is in fact a World Cinema Board designed specifically for those films. On other forums I've been on, I've seen where an admin-mod will "uproot" a thread from one board and plant it in the more appropriate board, if need be. So there's that, too.

I think a lot of the world cinema discussed would be the older "classic" period you mention, though I'm personally interested in both that and more modern non-English language films. You make a good point about the compartmentalisation, I guess that's a matter of preference. I think if all boards were very busy, like the old IMDb boards it would make sense. Here where the boards have a lot less traffic overall, I can see where keeping all "film" discussion to just a few boards (General, Classic, New, Popular Franchises) might be a more viable option. I've actively promoted this board on Film General and Classic Film, but I haven't singled out any specific threads as being more suited to this board. Not sure how folks would react to that. Maybe they can let me know here. Hoping to get at least a bit of a discussion going here and can then come to an arrangement most people can be happy with. I'd love to see this board thriving, but I just don't think there's enough traffic on IMDB v2.1 overall for that to happen.

For me personally when I first joined here I looked forward to discussing non-English language films more than anything. It's one of my passions. After seeing the lack of activity it's led me to not be not as active as I'd like to be. That and it seems whenever I do come here I'm usually rushed and don't get to spend a lot of time going over previous posts. I tend to look at the first few then move on. It's been stated that the older films will get more play and I agree with that. Most of us who watch these films have seen all the big name titles. Lately I've been watching more and more films that I've never seen before. Including quite a few newer ones and have been pleasantly surprised overall. The problem being that the chances of somebody watching the same random film as you've seen is going to be low with the amount of people that are here and the amount of movies that there are. As far as this board I do think it's necessary. As you said I think thread would get buried on different boards. I've always wondered if it's possible to do a movie discussion group. You get anybody who wants to participate and each week (or more) they watch the same movie and discuss it. I think now days most people have access to enough sites that it could be done. Netflix, Prime, Hulu, YouTube, Vudu, Filmrise, Asiancrush, Tubi, TCM etc... Maybe you pick a different country each week? If people are watching it at the same time it keeps the movie fresh in everybody's mind. I don't know if anybody would be interested in this but I think it's something that would work with the right people.

After seeing the lack of activity it's led me to not be not as active as I'd like to be. This exactly. I joined this forum when it was new and during the early days there were a lot of discussion about non-English and non-mainstream movies in general. Niche genres like old kung fu movies had their own discussion threads, even if they weren't always very active. I think that the decision to close so many smaller sub-forums like "Cult Movies" was not good and it seems to me that many users left as a result. I took a long break myself and came back only few days ago. I hope that there's still chance for interesting discussion about movies outside current Hollywood franchises. However, I doubt many users find Film General a good place for that, with its tiresome "your favorite picture of this celebrity?" kind of threads taking much of page 1. Closing down World Cinema would only make things worse. This seems to be the problem. It doesn't seem worth the trouble to make threads for very "small" and obscure movies that probably no one else here has seen. Maybe more general threads like "recommendations for asian martial art films?" or "recent Japanese dramas you've seen" could be the answer? Another thing, and don't take this personally Fox in the Snow, but lists and ratings without any comments don't really give all that much to me personally. I'd rather see longer reviews, short comments or discussions instead of them. Also if someone has interest in posting trailers for upcoming movies, or news about interesting new DVD/Blu-ray releases that would be nice, since I don't follow movie news all that closely.

I thought the popular franchise boards were viable but look where they went.

I actually said threads about non-English language films wouldn't get buried on Film General and Classic Film at least not for anyone using them regularly, because I don't think are that busy overall. I could be wrong. My argument is I'd get more responses posting the same thing there than here, so what's my incentive to start the thread here. I think I'm in the minority not being a fan of the "multiple board" format. I actually liked the "clean-up" that got rid of a lot of the lesser used boards. I will keep an open mind and see how things progress, as so far all responses have been pro keeping the board. As far as the "film discussion" threads go, I like the idea but I'm not sure how often I'd be able to participate, given I don't subscribe to a lot of those services. I'm pretty "old school" in that respect and still get most of my content from DVDs. I do have Mubi, but although that has some great content, the format makes what's available at any one time very limited.

As far as the lists go, I was just trying to get some "easy" threads going to try and get some activity on the board. While I admit they're are not always the most interesting threads, if the interest is there they can sometimes serve as a good "jumping off" point, which happened with a few of the year-by-year best ofs.

I was thinking it would get buried because of more activity but it makes sense that more people may respond to keep it active. As far as the ones I named Vudu, Filmrise, Asiancrush, Tubi, and YouTube are free or have free content. The only downfall is they do have ads during the movie but you get used to it and it's not that bad. Granted it's not all top tier movies but I've been able to find quite a few films that have plenty of award winning films and one's that have been nominated for Oscars.

I guess I do have access to YouTube and do use it sometimes to view films, and I know there's a lot more on it I want to see. I'm aware of and can probably access Tubi, I just haven't used it yet. I'll keep the others in mind. Thanks.
