I ask not because no one has cracked it yet (even though that's true), but because of it being a property that doesn't seem built for today. It's problematic in ways that have been discussed ad nauseam. If you modernize it and turn Mr. Fantasic in the jacked, Krasinski gym rat fans are begging for - that isn't going to feel quite right. But you will have to modernize it to some degree. H.E.R.B.I.E. can't be a flying vacuum cleaner. He is likely going to have to be made over like the new Lost in Space Robot that everyone is so horny for... "Sexy Danger, Reed Richards!" Krasinski/Blunt lovers, why does he have or even need shoulder straps in this photo? Is it for his shield that has a four instead of a star emblazoned on it? Is he Captain Fantastic now?  I mean, isn’t Ben the muscle of the outfit?  And why does absolutely no one care who plays Ben or Johnny, as if it were an afterthought that could be decided on the first day of shooting? You can't tell an origin story, and you can't pretend they were hiding out in the multiverse or stuck in some time loop. We hardcore Fantastic Four fans are in love with the idea of them triumphantly returning to the big screen. We want to see them vindicated after all these years of mediocre big-screen translations. But we have no idea how or really even why the world needs to see the Fantastic Four --- again. The supremely uneven output of recent Fantastic Four comic books bears out the truth. They've only been remotely interesting when paired with another team like the Avengers or the X-Men. If not for the Future Foundation, we could almost literally say the property has been frozen in amber for the last decade. Some of the most interesting stories about the characters in recent years are essentially solo outings. So what is to become of our Four cosmic troubleshooters? Can Disney crack the uncrackable? Or should we just stop acting like the Angel of Verdun has anything to do with the Invisible Woman?  |

Nothing is impossible, but there are a lot of things that are extremely difficult to do. A successful re-re-interpretation of the Fantastic Four is one of them. If fans get their way, it would be a Mr. Universe contest with a perfectly mussed, jacked, and oiled up Mr. Fantastic looking askance whenever possible. And then Doctor Doom will show up to say intimidating shit. We've gone light, dark, and everywhere in between with the property, and nothing is the right fit. Disney's got considerable brainpower going for it, but I'm very close to calling it... What is it they say in those Frozen movies again?

Thankfully the bar has been set very low by Fox. They went small and put little money into their movies. Nowhere to go but up. It should be relatively easy to pull off as long as they get a cast that has the right chemistry and treat these characters as they were envisioned, as a family of explorers. Somewhat similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. Embrace the ridiculous, don't be ashamed of the material, give it the proper scope by taking them to alien worlds facing larger than life villains. Make it humorous and relatable, but not goofy. They can be a gateway to characters like Namor, the Silver Surver, The Inhumans, etc. with potential crossovers with the GOTG, Black Panther, Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men, etc. No need to mix them with the Avengers.
Krasinski and Blunt are obvious choices. They are both very likable and relatable that can mesh well with anyone.

Dead weight sure, but easily forgotten with the bar set so low and so much potential just waiting to be tapped. Like X-Men, Fox just didn't know what they were sitting on when they had it.

They're almost too obvious. So was Patrick Stewart and Samuel L Jackson. Sometimes the obvious choice is the best choice. Great examples, but this isn't exactly the same. Stewart was Professor X in both manner and appearance in real life. Ultimate Fury was literally modeled after Sam Jackson, he was almost preordained to play the role once it came up in the MCU. Krasinski isn't Reed Richards. I'm not saying he couldn't become Reed through the magic of acting. But, right now, there is nothing in his personality or film portfolio that suggests he has anything in common with the smartest man in the marvel universe. Slapping a beard on the character in the comic books just isn't going to do it for me... The only thing the Blunt/Kransinki machine has going for it, in my mind, is that they are a married couple, and they can echo that dynamic on-screen as Reed and Sue.

I don't think it's uncrackable. Certainly bringing Captain America to the big screen was a greater challenge. And Marvel knocked that out of the park.
In fact, I personally think the B movie action serial tone of the first Cap movie is PERFECT for F4. And if not that then go for the comicky celebration that is The Avengers. The problem is that those god awful Tim Story movies botched that take, so no studio is likely to repeat it. It's precisely why Fox went all dark and gritty- which was never right for this property.
To me, F4 is classic campy Marvel. And I use the word "campy" in the most positive way. I don't want to see "grounded" F4 or an F4 that compromises on what it should truly be (like the Ant Man movies do). I want pure glorious 60s era F4. But... Would that fly today? Maybe. Maybe not.
The real question is what will the MCU do? And I think you need only look at Dr Strange and Ant Man. Given that this franchise has failed twice, Marvel will probably play it safe as they did with those two titles- which is to say that they will try excessively hard to make it go down smoothly for general audiences. None of the boldness of Black Panther or the pure gleeful comicky tone of First Avenger or The Avengers. And if that happens, I will be one disappointed squid-man.

Give me a Derrikman, Reed or Watts and I'll say No No No! As I mentioned above I fear that F4 will be a property that is played very safe with the primary goal of winning over audiences that may otherwise not care.

No, nothing is impossible. It's not like we're dealing with something scientific here and have to develop a vaccine. I say go with the Ultimate Fantastic 4 version where they're in college, great characters imo. Whatever version you know, chemistry and snappy dialogue is key-if they can do that right, the rest is just background noise
