Do you think respect should be earned or given ?

I always give respect, until somebody gives me a reason not to. Get off on the right foot. As the good book says, whatever is hurtful to you, do not do to any other person.

You can give respect to someone who has earned respect. But how do they earn it? Get down on their knees and blow you?

Eh, don't feel so bad. It happens to all of us.

Respect has different definitions.
While I don't automatically admire an look up to people that I've just met I do try to have consideration for their feelings and rights. Which to me is having respect for them. They don't need to earn it.
They have my respect until they do something to make me think otherwise.

While I appreciate the differentiation being drawn by people, I don't like those people you meet who treat you dirt from the get-go. Then one day you say, "What's your problem?" They say, "You need to earn my respect". You say, "Who the hell are you, the Queen of England?" They say, "Too rich for your peasant blood".

Courtesy is given. Respect is earned. Courtesy and respect are different concepts. Say, you meet a man and shake his hand. That shows a very rudimentary type of respect. Courtesy is when you open the door for an old lady. You respect your father. You show courtesy to a clerk at 7-11. You can give respect to someone who has earned respect. But how do they earn it? Get down on their knees and blow you? Since when do we respect some whore who gives us a blow job? Respect has different definitions. While I don't automatically admire an look up to people that I've just met I do try to have consideration for their feelings and rights. Which to me is having respect for them. They don't need to earn it. They have my respect until they do something to make me think otherwise. That's my point. There are different levels of respect. There's a very base respect for something like age or perhaps gender or past accomplishments. We give those to strangers. I respect a war veteran who risked death for his country. But he may also be a creep who beats his wife and rapes his daughter. Respect is not a blanket concept. While I appreciate the differentiation being drawn by people, I don't like those people you meet who treat you dirt from the get-go. Then one day you say, "What's your problem?" They say, "You need to earn my respect". You say, "Who the hell are you, the Queen of England?" They say, "Too rich for your peasant blood".I definitely would not respect that person at all, at all. That would inspire contempt.

I treat all large flesh-eating animals with respect. And I hate it when autocorrect treats me with contempt.
