Let's say (not outside the realm of possibility) that Days ends in the next couple years, and nothing TOO major occurs casting-wise (y'know, Missy Reeves quitting and vowing to never set foot on the set again, Kristian Alfonso dying, stuff like that) that would screw with a possible plot of a Days of our Lives finale. How would you end it? I think about this every so often, some ideas I have change, some stay the same, here's where I'm at right now:
In the weeks preceding the finale...
I would try to wrap up as many characters and arcs as I can to have a relatively clean house by the end. If they're not together, the following characters will wind up being together by the end: Steve/Kayla, Shane/Kimberly, Shawn/Belle, Philip/Chloe, Shawn/Belle, Eric/Nicole, Mike/Carrie (sorry not sorry for this one). And some of the more minor couples there might also leave in the last few weeks so that they get their coda but don't bog down the finale with too much going on.
A big late story is that I would do a whole plot where Stefano did have another chip stashed somewhere and E.J. is implanted with it and Sami returns to town with this E.J. who's secretly Stefano and it's eventually established the only reason E.J. regained all his sentience was because of the Stefano chip and without it he was doomed to be a vegetable forever, and there'd be some dramatic showdown between E.J.-as-Stefano and John, where John dies taking E.J.-as-Stefano out with him to protect Sami and Marlena. And then in E.J.-as-Stefano's last moment he reveals Bo is alive, a last desperate move for E.J. to redeem himself by helping them. During the course of this story as all this is revealed, Lucas would be Sami's rock and this would lead to them ending up together at last.
The Bo revelation gives Hope (alongside other main heroes) enough information to eventually hunt down Bo and rescue him and bring him back to Salem. Meanwhile, Roman and Kate get back together and decide to leave town and retire to a comfortable life in Florida or something. Roman recruits Bo and Hope to take over the Brady Pub, and Roman and Kate leave town.
As many other side characters as I can who don't have some HEA to look forward to, I'd try to wrap up in the weeks preceding, some fitting ending to characters like Brady or Kristen or Abe, etc. Abe I'd love to give one final ghost conversation with Lexie if Renee Jones would do it, maybe before deciding to leave Salem to make things work with Valerie or something like that.
If John Aniston survives and can film until the series end, I would have Victor pass away shortly after Bo's return to life, so there can be some sense that maybe on some level Victor was hanging on until he saw Bo again. Then he'd pass away, and in his will there's some cruel joke where he leaves 49% of the company to Philip, 49% to Brady, and 2% to Xander and whomever can best use him ultimately winds up with the company. Instead, Brady decides he wants no part of Titan and just sells his 49% to Philip and decides to leave town, wishing Philip and Chloe well with the Kiriakis dynasty.. I would have Brady leave Salem in the final weeks, committed to being a good father to Tate and Rachel and determined to forget about love. In his final scene, heading on a plane, some woman (played by a notable soap actress, but just for this scene alone) bumps into Brady in a meet cute and we end with him in a "And so the unending search for love continues..." vibe.
Final Episode:
X Months Later (depending on when it is). Christmas Eve, We're mainly cutting between three locations: the Brady Pub, the Horton House and Marlena's penthouse. Bo and Hope reminisce about their time together, while other customers at the Pub (Steve and Kayla, Sami and Lucas, maybe Shawn and Belle although it's hard for flashbacks depending on who's playing them) reminisce about their own time together. Meanwhile, at the Horton house, Jack and Jennifer and Doug and Julie are getting ready for the Christmas gathering and also reminiscing. Meanwhile, Marlena, still in mourning over John, is reminiscing about their time together alone.
We got flashbacks of Bope, Jarlena, JnJ, Doulie, Stayla, Lumi and maybe Shelle if they make the cut.) [Obviously Doug's participation is dependent on Bill Hayes being alive when this happens.]
Eventually, all the guests at the Brady Pub have to take off. Most are going to the Horton Christmas, but Bo has to close down the pub and Sami decides to check on her mom.
Last 4 scenes:
4. The Horton House: One final Christmas Eve ornament hanging. In addition to Doug, Julie, Jack, Jennifer, Hope, Lucas, Shawn and Belle (and Steve and Kayla can just be there even though they're not hanging ornaments, but just so we get a brief Jack/Steve interraction) As many main Hortons as can be there are there just for this portion of this episode to hang ornaments. Maggie, Will and Allie, Abigail and J.J., Ciara, Mike, Marie, Eli, whoever makes sense with the cast as it is. It's a nice scene, we get a slow pan of the whole Horton clan, and it all somehow calls to mind Tom and Alice.
3. The Penthouse: One last final scene of Sami and Marlena discussing the memory of John and just all the tumult of their past. They finally end on some idea that maybe it's time for Marlena to move on.
2. Some DiMera Lab: Rolf tells a patient that it's time to wake up.... we see John Black's eyes flick open.
1. The Brady Pub: Bo is just turning off the lights to the Pub when someone busts through the door, Wayne Northrup. Bo's like "Who the hell are you?" and Roman's like "Bo! It's me! Roman! Don't you recognize me?!"
I dunno, probably tons to pick apart here. But I love the idea of having a final episode with reminisces of all the supercouples establishing Bope, J&J, S&K Lumi etc. as in love and together and happily ever after, end with a final Horton Christmas scene, and then do last-minute twist(s) (John's not dead, and also maybe we had an imposter Roman for 20+ years and what does THAT mean?) just to give that sense of "Even if we're not there to see it, it's still Salem. The drama goes on..." And you set of let everyone make up whatever they want with Marlena, Robo-John and the two Romans Part 2.
