I've only read Titus Andronicus and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, but the Richardson and Liptrot volumes sound interesting. I think I might supplant the overpraised McEwan with Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, which contains some of the most eloquently 'silent' chapters I know.

I've read The House of Spirits and The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, maybe I'll try some of the others. "So many books, so little time" I don't know who said this, I've seen it on t-shirts but it is a true statement.
