I think he would had played it too suave and debonair. Indiana Jones is a little more nasty in Raiders (and hell, Temple of Doom) than I think Clooney can handle.

I think he would labor to pull the role off. I never get the feeling that he is ever in any real danger or conveys uncomfortableness well; kind of like a more charming, respectable version of early Chevy Chase.

No. Sean Connery has the whole rugged, crusty, cantankerous old man role completely mastered in the 1989 film. Clooney wouldn't be able to accomplish that. His Dr. Henry Jones would have been more charming, but utterly lacking in the hard edge that makes the character so memorable when played by Connery.
