I'm not sure if any vampire movies would count since a vampire could be seen as a hunter rather than a stalker since they seek sustenance from their victims. That's an interesting point I'd not considered. Some of the most compelling modern vampire stories concern bloodsuckers attempting to resist the urge to kill but then they become weak in doing so.

Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo and Robert Mitchum in The Night of the Hunter. ... not sure that I would deem the Stewart character a "stalker," but your perspective is intriguing.

... Robert Walker's Bruno Anthony in Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (1951).
... Sondra Locke's Jennifer Spencer in Clint Eastwood's Sudden Impact (1983).
Eastwood's next film, Tightrope (which he also directed, uncredited) toys with the idea that the sexual stalker could be Eastwood's New Orleans police detective himself.

I see what you probably mean now: the second half of the film. Again, I am not sure that I would consider the action "stalking," but you suggest the salient point: Scottie Ferguson becomes quite an unheroic and manipulative (if still somewhat sympathetic) figure, subverting expectations about heroism and masculinity in film.

petrolino Another interesting thread. Some how I missed it when it first appeared. I especially liked your opening OP paragraph. REALLY frightening is Don Johnson in Guilty as Sin . Truly an awful character and a movie that will stick with you (and not in a good way). Would "One Hour Photo" fit into the collection, it's not quite stalker in the usual sense. As for obsessed fans : Misery, King of Comedy , Perfect Blue. The Fan , Nurse Betty .

Eastwood's next film, Tightrope (which he also directed, uncredited) toys with the idea that the sexual stalker could be Eastwood's New Orleans police detective himself. 'Tightrope' is a gripping trip downstream for Clint Eastwood who's kept on his toes by Genevieve Bujold. A hidden gem in his filmography, I feel. I've not seen 'Sudden Impact' in years, could do with picking up the 'Dirty Harry' box-set at some point. Sondra Locke has always brought an unsettling quality to the big screen and she's been keen to make challenging pictures. According to the Hollywood rumour mill, Locke could be joining Samantha Mathis, Jennifer Tilly, Cynda Williams, Kim Wayans, Keith David, Jack Noseworthy and Lenny Von Dohlen for a new film from Alan Rudolph entitled 'Ray Meets Helen' (2017). This would mark her first screen appearance in 17 years. The cast will be led by Rudolph regular Keith Carradine so consider me in. "Right now I'm shooting a film with my old friend Alan Rudolph. It's called Ray Meets Helen. I'm playing Ray, an ex-boxer. He had a shot in his 20s but had a mishap that ended his boxing career. He's got a good buddy, played by Keith David, who works for an insurance company, and he keeps me afloat by hiring me to do insurance legwork, investigative stuff for claims. And Helen is being played by Sondra Locke, who has come out of retirement to play this role. She had no intention of getting back into this craziness, but she's a friend of Alan and his wife, and they gave her this script and she couldn't resist. So we are delighted to have her on board. She's a romantic interest. Through a series of chance occurrences and encounters, we wind up circling one another, and a romance is sparked. It's very sweet--I call it a sort of sweet, twisted romantic fable. Alan's one of the people in my life that I love. We've always had a wonderful time working together, so this is really a gift to have a chance to do it one more time. I find him to be one of our more inventive filmmakers, and I've always appreciated his vision and his sense of style. I just think he's truly unique and gifted--he makes movies unlike anyone else. I love what he does, so I'm having a great time doing this."

I think 'Guilty As Sin' tends to fly under the radar like all of Sidney Lumet's (relatively patchy) work from the 1990s but it's a film I enjoy. Don Johnson drew justifiable praise for his performance. The script is by Larry Cohen, one of the best independent crime & horror filmmakers in the business. Good call on obsessive fans. There's been some interesting pictures addressing this subject. I've not seen 'One Hour Photo' which I've often seen praised for Robin Williams' performance. I actually saw most of it once lol. I'll check it out, thanks.

- Keith Carradine, Broadway World... very well stated regarding Tightrope. Before or after (after if you want to avoid spoilers) you see Sudden Impact again, you might want to read this essay by longtime film critic Dave Kehr. Here is an excerpt: In addition to Locke's character and performance, which amount to a substantial revision of the femme fatale, the film is perhaps most notable on a visual level. Eastwood's compositions and camera movements are mesmerizing, as he takes advantage of the wide-screen aspect ratio without sacrificing the intimacy normally associated with noir or neo- noir.

there are many indian movies that glorify the stalker. it is a big discussion point in india because feminists feel these movies encourage real life stalking and rape of women. actors who have appeared in stalker roles have since apologized and turned into hypermoralistic male feminists.

An old UK film RETURN OF A STRANGER 1961 starring John Ireland.
DON'T TALK TO STRANGE MEN 1962 In this case the stalking is mostly done with a rural telephone booth. The film is similar in atmosphere to:
AND SOON THE DARKNESS 1970
Which was a Bryan Forbes produced production along with:
THE MAN WHO HAUNTED HIMSELF 1970 which has Roger Moore stalking himself!

Whenever the subject of stalkers in films is brought up, my mind automatically goes to Swimfan (2002) and Erikia Christensen's character of Madison Bell. ![](https://66.media.tumblr.com/defa02cee7bbc9b67e64a081f73d3b7e/tumblr_owv9pnfmSB1w4hdrko8_400.gif) The last one I can remember watching, though, would have to be Unsane (2018) starring Claire Foy as the character Sawyer Valentini, who has a stalker. ![](https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3DnfEktq8Eo/WraRk5uT_KI/AAAAAAABH0M/uIU-1XqSxbYai0FQ929-lc6V9ixV_tP-ACLcBGAs/s1600/u4.gif) Then, of course, you've got poor Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who has been stalked for four Scream movies. ![](https://i.imgur.com/zQ4Xsth.gif) She should probably live somewhere there aren't any phones. Hannibal in Hannibal the series was amazing. I enjoy watching the different Hannibal Lecter movies that have been made but I've never seen the tv show. Sounds good. The TV series is definitely worth checking out, petrolino. While Mads Mikkelsen's portrayal Hannibal Lecter in the series may be 'different' to that of Anthony Hopkins' performance in the movies, it's just as excellent/memorable. Hannibal was one of my favourite TV shows and I was really annoyed to hear it had been cancelled at the end of Season 3. I'm hoping the rumours of it possibly returning prove true.

Stalkers feature prominently in classic crime cinema. Sometimes these characters are portrayed as vile sociopaths who are predatory manipulators and compulsive liars. They can be extreme narcissists who transfer their own pain on to others. Sometimes they are snide and snarky villains like in backstage dramas, or those who constantly seek to undermine like ladder-climbers in office dramas. Nowadays online stalkers are becoming common characters to appear in crime and horror cinema, some films being based on real life stories. What are some of your favourite performances from actors playing stalkers in classic movies? Here's an old article in 'The Independent' to whet your appetite : Stalker movies - the genre that won't go awayThanks. Never was huge on Scorsese version feels way too over the top as well.
