Any Jane Austen Vanity Fair Any Gore Vidal, as long as his collected essays, United States, is one of the volumes as well The Collected Stories of Flannery O'Connor 1984 The Collected Essays of George Orwell The Oxford edition of the collected plays of Shakespeare Robert Lowell's The Mills of the Kavanaughs (it would take a long stint on a desert island to fully decode that work) The collected poems of Emily Dickinson The collected poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins
...and I can think of too many others, so I guess I'm gonna need a bigger desert island.

Me also thinking, but not very deeply - George Orwell - Essays George MacDonald Fraser - Flashman At The Charge and Mr American Gore Vidal - Lincoln, 1876, Empire and Hollywood Barry Unsworth - Sacred Hunger Jon Savage - England's Dreaming Robin Jenkins - The Cone Gatherers If I could count all the volumes of Vidal's 'American' series ( Burr, 1876, Lincoln, Empire, Hollywood, Washington DC, The Golden Age) as one book, that would be a definite desert island must. Probably the best works ever on America's past and how we got to where we are in the present.

In addition to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Le Carre's classic take on the world of George Smiley and the "Circus", being stranded on a desert island would give me the opportunity to reread the whole of the Smiley saga.
Call for the Dead A Murder of Quality TTSP The Honourable Schoolboy Smiley's People
I feel that before settling down to enjoy these, I ought to buy myself some quality slippers and a pipe

I'd be wanting to take sets, but that would be a lot more than ten books.
