The Martian : I hate space movies and stuff like 127 Hours, so. Film which mixed both looked like a horrible idea but ended up liking it very much The Big short : i thought it would be boring would understand nothing but turned out to be favorite of the nominees that year.

Unbreakable And Split
Same thing happened with both movies bizarrely. But I think unbreakable is great and I think spilt is decent enough, not as dumb as I was expecting.

Mad Max: Fury Road The Adventures of Tintin The Man from U.N.C.L.E (not a great film, but it's fun)

i'd pretty much had the superhero beaten out of me by Hollywood by the time Iron Man came around. even the better ones almost always came up lacking. i didn't even see it for over a year, and what a mistake that was. still among the best in the genre.
although "great" is a little much i was bordering on cognitive dissonance when i watched Ghost in the Shell (2017). i'd fully expected to loathe and despise it, now i'm disappointed in the (likely) lost potential for its followups.
probably more that escape me presently.

Have to agree on Edge Of Tomorrow. Was expecting the typical Cruise action flick, and was pleasantly surprised. Doesn't hurt that Groundhog Day is one of my favourite films either.
I'd also add 25th Hour. I'd never heard of it when I picked it out of the bargain bin, but I am a big Edward Norton fan so thought I'd give it a shot.

John Wick to me looked so dumb seeing the trailers for it. Yet all I hear is positive things on that film and it's sequel. I hope it comes on either HBO or Netflix so I'll watch it. The line in the trailer of "I'm thinking I'm back" really sold me on how dumb it seemed. It reminded me of a bad Nick Cage movie.

Southland Tales...not much of a narrative, but I enjoyed the hell out of this one.

Fifty Shades of Grey (2015). Entertaining and well-made. It's major downside were the atrocious performances, especially by the two leading performers.
