A strange comparison, I know. But I was rewatching the classic X Men trilogy this week and got to thinking that X3, while very flawed, is not nearly as bad as people claim it is.
It seems that in its time people were way harder on these movies than they are now. Yes, X3 has problems: a poorly adapted Dark Phoenix, ridiculous character deaths, ECT. But there are also many positives, including great acting, some excellent pay offs and some solid attempts to keep the series thematically deep.
Meanwhile, Aquaman is a big dumb mess of a plot with the thinnest most superficial characterization since Batman and Robin. And it got praised.
I have to wonder if X3 is due for a bit of positive reevaluation. It's not a great movie by any means, but it isn't really a terrible one either.
Or perhaps newer comic book movies (DC and Marvel) should be held to the same standards.

While Last Stand is not a great movie I prefer it any day over Aquaman To go further I prefer it to everything DC has done since TDKR. Excluding Wonder Woman and Joker, which are both far better. I know comparing it to the MCU is toxic on boards like this, but I'd also prefer X3 to the lower 25% of MCU movies.

Aquaman all the way. I don’t even hate X3: the Last Stand.

I agree on some of these aspects. Not sure which one I would prefer since both are disappointing.
At least with Aquaman, the money is on the screen. It looks and feels like a big budget comic book film with all of the trimmings. It is large in scale and the characters and the world they inhabit are fully realized. The rest of the film is lame with some painfully embarrassing dialogue.
X3 was a very expensive film, but it doesn't look like one at all. All of the action scenes are small in scale (X-Men versus the Brotherhood in Jean's house, Alcatraz island battle, the danger room sequence with only a barely-there sentinel), characters like Angel, Colossus, Juggernaut, Iceman (in ice-form) are wasted and poorly presented, and the whole thing comes off as a cheap, made-for-TV flick. It's hard to see where the money was spent.

I didn't dislike X-Men 3 either but I do prefer Aquaman.

I suppose I should've just made this an "X3 is underrated" thread. Dumping on Aquaman was a bit unfair.

I similarly found TLS underrated and Aquaman overrated.

Can't say the same for X-Men: The Last Stand, which somehow needed $210 million to make.

Magneto just abandoning Mystique like that I actually love that part where he just walks away because she's not one of them anymore. It really shows how cold and fanatical he is. What I hated was that Mystique just went to the authorities and abandoned a cause that she believed in. Would've been better if she went over the X Men. Also... HES THE JUGGERNAUT, BITCH!!!!&!!

'Aquaman' is fun and entertaining.
On the other hand, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND is a bleak and brilliant superhero movie, with some terrific sequences and an impressive, epic final fight. All deaths in the movie are great, expect Cyke's one (off-screen).

Magneto being turned into a homosapien is an absolutely amazing end for that character. Brilliant moments like that balance out the negatives. To me anyway.

I liked this as well but I think both together show the ultimate truth about both of their characters in the trilogy, their motivations are bullshit, it's just the excuse they use to justify their own self interest rather than a true cause they believe in plus it gives them the excuse to be heinous pieces of shit, which I think is obvious in prior movies also, and another thing that sets them apart from the X-Men who are actually willing to sacrifice for their cause.

Neither are great but Aquaman I can sit an rewatch with enjoyment because imo it is what it is meant to be, a fun action adventure superhero movie, TLS is just a shoddy pile of meh, it's a teenager trying to act worldly but just comes across like a douche, it wastes characters completely introduces others pointlessly just because oooh ooh they have X-Men brand recognition yay, who cares though when they are useless time consuming characters that should be cut out because they don't add to anything really, use characters like this for Easter eggs not new secondary characters at the expense of other established ones. I really dislike Rogues I guess you can call it story in this? just feels like she's added because Anna Paquin had a contract they had to fulfil and nothing more which sucks, I personally hate the attempt at making Logan kill Jean be something meaningful because in reality the fucker barely knew her, he wanted into her knickers no more than that because he doesn't know anything more than "woah she gets my dick hard", granted they had to write out Cyclops but still don't then try and pawn off what should be his scene onto Logan because it's stupid. TLS has some good moments, but not enough to outweigh the shit imo, damn you Ratner why couldn't you be like Singer, you know disappear for days and let other people make the movie for you whilst you claim the credit and the payday

X3 for the win here.
I never outright hated X3, but it's a challenge (for me) to get through it in a single sitting. Once every two or three years, I resolve to watch it (and the rest of the trilogy) again and then find myself walking away from the screen at specific intervals during the film or otherwise multitasking. There's just something about that film that fails to hold my attention.
Aquaman deserves some praise for being an almost entirely non-offensive superhero film designed to please nearly everyone. I find it hard to summon any praise or criticism of the effort at all. All I can say is that I saw it, then almost immediately forgot it and life went on.
I will likely never watch Aquaman ever again.
