For what's supposed to be a goofy comedy with a goofy Marine, they did an exceptional job with the characters. They did a better job than a lot of military movies paying attention to details with the uniforms, and even how the actors wear them, take their covers off, their shoes, salad, creases, everything. It's really rather impressive.

I'm so in love with Frank Sutton. His deep, gravely voice makes me weak in the knees, and he's easy on the eyes.

So a dead man makes you weak in the knees....Ok. I can think of far more dead actors who make me swoon than I can of the current crop of live ones.

Because the stars of yesteryear were real stars and household names and had star quality. Now the people you see in movies and tv shows feel like average joe's that could be bagging your groceries at the supermarket or making your sandwich at Subway.

And not even particularly attractive or charismatic average joes at that. Acting at its best should exert something of a magical spell over the viewer, and most of today's breed couldn't even keep my eyes open, much less entrance me.

I think that's why I prefer to watch classic TV and movies. When I see what's being mass-produced today, everything (and everyone) just looks the same, and feels the same. There's also often an over-reliance on CGI which often replaces solid acting performances. Not always, mind, but I really do like the charm of older movies.

Yes because who wants to watch a movie that has actors that have less charisma than we do.

... When I see what's being mass-produced today, everything (and everyone) just looks the same, and feels the same. ..I thought it was just me feeling like that ! PLUS many are poorly miked and have no idea how to project their voices and turn out be marbled mouthed and non-understandable. It's NOT my ears as the older actors can be understood where the younger ones cannot ... example being Trouble With the Curve ... Clint Eastwood was understandable in every scene ... Amy Adams not so much. Justin Timberlake did fine .. perhaps the singing training helped ? ME -TV saves many a day as it is an olde tv treasure trove !

They paid a lot more attention to dialect coaching I think. I'm such a stickler for enunciation, and it drives me bonkers when people either shout (thinking that's the way to project their voice -- it's not the same thing, at all.), or when they DO. NOT. ENUNCIATE. Agh. I have very sensitive hearing, but I was taught from a very young age how to speak properly, and as I grew up, I developed a great love of language, as well as a respect for the proper use of it (whatever language I'm speaking, it must be specific). I equate many of today's actors' style with being on stage and having your back to the audience.

More about FRANK SUTTON here "Belonging to the drama club and appearing in high school plays sparked his early interest in acting, and he majored in Dramatic Arts at Columbia University, graduating cum laude." One of his six feature film appearances was in Town Without PityKirk Douglas, Richard Jaeckel, Robert Blake, and Frank Sutton
Always liked him, whether he was the good guy or the baddie !

Always liked him, whether he was the good guy or the baddie ! I think he was born to play military roles. He's got the perfect bearing.
