The aforementioned (but not discussed) "Bullets or Ballots" (1936). Eddie Robinson stars as Johnny Blake, longtime police detective, who is ousted from the force by a new city government. He is offered a job by mobster Al Kruger (Barton Maclane), an early example of the "business man" model of gangster. Kruger's right hand man, however, is 'Bugs' Farrell (Bogart) who is old-school volatile and violent. Johnny accepts Kruger's offer. Has he really gone over to the dark side? Stay tuned.

The Roaring Twenties (1939)Three men attempt to make a living in Prohibitionist America after returning home from fighting together in World War I. This marked the end of James Cagney's cycle of gangster films for Warner Bros. Cagney wanted to diversify his roles and would not play a gangster again until White Heat (1949), ten years later.

John Kincaid (Cagney): What's your proposition? Whip McCord:(Bogart) You go right ahead and build your town and attract settlers. John Kincaid: So you can take away their money at faro and roulette, eh? Whip McCord: Yeah, that's the idea. You take care of their virtues, I'll take care of their vices. Simple, ain't it?

(1937) "An early gangster role for Humphrey Bogart that built on the success of his performance in The Petrified Forest (1936) the year before. Bogart's name appeared below Sylvia Sidney's in the opening credits. This was reversed for any subsequent re-releases."

(1939) "After the killing of her husband by friendly fire during a police raid, Dr. Carole Nelson tries to find gangster Joe Gurney to clear her name with the medical board." "Humphrey Bogart got star billing for the first time in his career, even though co-star Kay Francis made nine times more money than he did. This was a deliberate snub by Warner Brothers, who had to pay Kay Francis $200,000 a year, even when her movies began to lose money."

(1938) Bogart plays a lawyer in this one : James Frazier : Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute, gentleman. There's no sense in running too far ahead of ourselves. Don't forget, there are all kinds of grand juries and there's all kinds of ways of handling them. That's why you got me for.

Details pending About “The Old Maid.” According to Sperber and Lax, Bogart was cast in the 19th century meller because he had done well opposite Bette Davis in “Dark Victory.” He was to play a man who has a “romantically early death but whose memory haunts the two women who love him” – Bette and Miriam Hopkins. After 5 days shooting, producers thought they had made a mistake and brought in the other male from “Dark Victory” George Brent, a “6-foot vanilla foil to the two embattled heroines.” After making more than two dozen films without a problem, Bogart was simply dismissed. Humiliated. The message seemed clear. He would never become a romantic lead.

1938 – Men Are Such Fools (Harry Galleon) "Linda Lawrence rises from secretary to account executive in an advertising agency. She falls in love with ex-football star Jimmy Hall and marries him. Radio man Harry Galleon will push her career further if she will just be "nice" to him and, when Jimmy gets jealous, she quits in favor of life as a suburban housewife. But her career still calls to her." Harry Galleon: I'm probably a cad. Are you by any chance a weak woman?
Bogart looks a little "cheerier" than usual in the posters for this movie.

Stand In (1937) A New York bank plans to sell a Hollywood studio at a big loss. But the head accountant is suspicious and goes to investigate. He finds chicanery, romance, and help to save the studio."When the film was originally released, the names of Leslie Howard and Joan Blondell were above the title, and the name of Humphrey Bogart, who played a supporting role, was below. When it was re-released in 1948, Howard had been dead for 5 years, and Bogart was riding the crest of the wave, so the billing was re-arranged and Bogart was now top billed." again with the bow-tie !

San Quentin (1937) "An army trainer becomes captain of the prison yard and in time, falls for the sister of a hardened inmate." Trivial triva : Humphrey Bogart plays Ann Sheridan's kid brother in this film, even though in real life he was actually older than her by 15 years. In the radio broadcast in the film, he's described as 25 years old.

mikef6 O'Brien often tends to be on the dull and plodding side ... especially so when dealing with the likes of live wires Cagney and Bogart. The Bogart face image made me Can HEAR him saying the line !
