People really didn't like it. Thing is it's a great movie. Do you think it's rough depiction of humanity and it's counterculture ideals made people too uncomfortable?

Great movie, brah. How do you think it's subversive? Well it's about a group of selfish people that want to start a new "better" society for themselves but fail because humans are really bad at not screwing up good things. I wonder if that turned people off.

My dislike of the movie has nothing to do with the themes. It just isn't a very interesting movie imo. The story doesn't make me uncomfortable at all.
The reviews on RT just say that the movie is bland and fails at what it is trying to do.

My beef with the movie is that it feels restrained in an attempts to be an American box office hit. I've never read the book so I don't know if the book takes things further.

This was a decent Dicaprio film and it was actually a box office success (made over $144 million on a $50 million dollar budget). Dicaprio wasn't the most likable character in this though. I found him to be a little punk in this film (the way he stole that French dude's gf was cold blooded haha)
But overall I dug it and thought the concept/plot was pretty cool (finding an island filled with grade A weed has always been a dream of mine lol)
solid 7/10

The reviews on RT just say that the movie is bland and fails at what it is trying to do. It's a go-to for critics who are uncomfortable with a movies themes to call it bland. There is nothing bland about a room splattered with blood, or a man slowly left to die, screaming in the jungle. The truth is that The Beach is the opposite of bland. It came out pre 9/11 at a time when the Backstreet Boys were the hottest act in the world. The movie depicts humanity at it's worst and most selfish. I don't think people could handle it. They wanted it to be something else.

Any subject can be made bland depending on how it is depicted. You are using a cop out. The people who disagree with me are wrong. That is not an argument, it is self-serving nonsense. Violence can be very boring depending on how it is handled. This movie takes interesting ideas and makes them uninteresting. The movie is entertaining to an extent, but it doesn't leave much of an impression on me.

Let me clarify something though.
There are movies that I rate very poorly because they leave a bad taste in my mouth. If you want to say it is because of me being uncomfortable then so be it. The Beach is not one of these movies. The Beach isn't a terrible movie, it just isn't a good movie imo.
Leaving a bad taste in my mouth is different from being uncomfortable though, as I tend to like movies that are subversive. I am a big fan of The Counselor and that is one of the most cynical and arguably misanthropic movies I have ever seen.

Carlyle and DiCaprio are sublime as well as Swinton and it explores interesting ground but ultimately feels like it could've gone farther with the concept as well.

I thought it was a good movie and rated it 6/10. My problem was that i'd read and loved the book and way too much was missing from the film although i can't remember what now, it's been too long.

Watching that trailer reminded me why I had no interest in seeing it. Doesn't look like it's about anything.

Its good but the story is kind of boring. Theres no twists or subplots that hold your interest for too long. Once they reach the mystery island the film gets boring real fast because there's not much else to discover.
