Never really got into MASH. The show was huge. Maybe I will give it another shot at some point.

It should ended a few seasons earlier, but for the most part, it was an enjoyable diversion.

The show has been around for years. I never have watched it. I never could see humor in war. Hogan's Hero's is another one I never could get into for the same reason.

It's not about finding something funny in war. Often there are moral quandaries and racist idiots who get called out. Plus the show itself isn't really about war in and of itself as much as doctors, the military, surgery, and how people communicate among themselves under stressful conditions.
It's not like it's glorifying war. My only complaint is that I dislike laugh tracks. Otherwise, I'd say this is a great TV-series with good chemistry between the characters.

Apparently one can disable the laugh track on the DVD releases of the series. Also, in some local markets, stations airing the series turn off the laugh track. You might want to discuss this with your local station to see if they'll turn it off.

I can understand why, but for some reason laugh tracks never bother me.

The folks in charge of the show never wanted a laugh track at all, but CBS was insistent on it being there. The producers were able to make it where there was never a laugh track during the OR scenes.

I'm watching it on MeTV and to the best of my knowledge, there's no way to disable the laugh track.
What bugs me about TV in general is how LOUD the introductions and commercials are. It's another reason I watch movies more often. I'm back to having my remote in my hand to flip the volume down and back up, back and forth....

There really should be a TV option because, well, it just sucks.

I can understand why, but for some reason laugh tracks never bother me. Me either. The dvd's do offer the option of turning them off but I tried it and it felt so off, maybe I am so conditioned to the laugh track.

I liked MASH the first few years but it got very cutesy and preachy. Now even the early years are annoying as the main characters are obnoxious louts. My father wouldn't allow me to watch Hogan's Heroes. He said there was nothing funny about the Third Reich and of the German military were so dumb the war wouldnt have lasted a year. My favorite recurring character on MASH was Col Flagg.

Just watched the episode where Margaret married Lt. Colonel Penobscot, and flew to Tokyo.
Season 6, episode 1 - that's what I'm watching now, next in line.
(I thought I was watching season 1, e1)
So season 5's send-off was Hot Lips getting married.

I have been seeing Jamie Farr on a couple of the game shows on the buzzr channel. He was good at the games

It's an interesting show. I'm not a fan, but I don't dislike it, either. I can recognize its quality. I would say it is extremely low-key.
And what a contrast to "All in the Family", which though funny, was loud to the point of being overbearing.
I remember reading an article about 70s sitcoms. When they got around to discussing the best of the best, it came down to AITF, Mary Tyler Moore and MASH. The article said that "All in the Family" got you in the head, "Mary Tyler Moore" got you in the heart and "MASH" got you in the gut. It was an interesting viewpoint.

Loved the series and watched it faithfully from beginning to end when it originally aired. In retrospect, I can appreciate some of the criticism that the show became a little too message-heavy and took itself a bit too seriously towards the end, but I suppose that the satiric gas alone wouldn't have survived for that number of years. It still stands as one of network television's tour de force shows and I surely do wish that television in general were turning out products as incisive with regard to war and with the state of the nation in general as this one was.

Now you're about to meet Charles Emerson Winchester III, a great character and a big improvement over Frank Burns. For me, Winchester was the best thing about the later years of MASH.
