NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, no contest. Not even in the same Universe.
Dawn of the Dead is just a ridiculously contrived neo Nazi propaganda movie, purely Hollywood, stupidly predictable for anyone who has seen more than five Hollywood movies, and just full of hate, with no regard to anything memorable or interesting.
DAY OF THE DEAD with Lori Cordille, is the only movie in the franchise that begins to compare with NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD original. Part of the reason is the "antagonists" are three dimensional. "Day of the Dead" has a bad buy who is a bit like Barnes of "Platoon", only not quite as sadistic. Barnes was out to hurt anybody he could, as he proved with his own toadies (O'Neal and the lieutenant) and there's no doubt that the mistakes the toadies made weren't their mistakes, but from information they got from the butcher Barnes. If Barnes was on a construction crew, he would purposely see to it that something was sabotaged that could cause in someone being killed or maimed.
However, Rhodes was genuinely out to do some good. When he does desert his men, it's out of fear and self preservation. Barnes does it out of sadistic evil. Rhodes is a better bad guy, because he has natural motivation, instead of movie motivation.
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD has an antagonist who is very credible, and very defensive. The reason the remake is so stupid and ridiculous is because the remake tries to justify mob mentality and vigilante justice, and it fails horribly in doing so.
The original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD had a great mix of dark humor which makes it what it is. It stands out above the crowd.
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD original 9/10 DAWN OF THE DEAD original and remake 1/10 and lower if possible.

Dawn. The shopping mall setting is inspired and the movie possesses a sense of scale that its predecessor lacks.

Technically it still isn’t, but you do you. Would you rather I created yet another thread? 😂 Think of it this way: The M.C.U. is a franchise. Each superhero gets their solo movies, which are series. This is similar. Sure, the 2 series don't share the same continuity, but hey, how many LIVING DEAD movies share it?

I don’t recall Romero or anyone actually consider Return to be part of the same continuity.
