Only one entry per act. Tomorrow is the number 1 number 1. www.theguardian.com/music/2020/apr/27/the-100-greatest-uk-no-1sIn my opinion there’s quite a lot of dross in there and even with the decent tracks I quibble with the ranking. And surely Elvis’ best No. 1 was Heartbreak Hotel. There’s no way he should be languishing so far down the list, even with Jailhouse Rock. I like Ghost Town by the Specials, but is it really the second best number 1 record in the history of the U.K. charts? That’s about 1400 records! Fucking Graun!

I don't know which songs made #1 in the UK, but there are better Jam, David Bowie, Pretenders, and Beatles songs. And "Some Velvet Morning" is the best Nancy Sinatra song (but probably not a #1).
As an American, it's always so bizarre to find songs that are minor novelty hits as #1s elsewhere - - "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick"? ? ?

Been following it. Don't ask me why. Biggest outrage was Spin Me Like A Record and Firestarter being top ten. But there's too many f*** ups to mention. This from a paper who omitted Angel of Harlem from U2's fifty greatest songs, a crapola band anyway with about 6 decent tunes. None of that matters. Who is gonna be #1, LaFong? Looking at the list it could be anyone. I thought maybe Come On Eileen, not my choice but going on their top picks being quite of our age. But I think it might be Rat Trap, which I'd be more than okay with. If they really don't give a f*** it might be You're The One That I Want. What say you? And don't say 'Grandad'. Earlier in the message forum I mentioned some personal favourite numbers that only reached #2, and someone with more time on his hands than Job has compiled his personal Top 100 of UK #2s (And it's rather good)

Heartbreak Hotel was never number 1 in the U.K.? Looking at your list of number 2s staggerstag Lots of weeks in the top 20 but never reached #1 15>14>8>5>4>3>2>2>2>3>3 (I'll Be Home, Pat Boone #1) >4>4>6> (Why Do Fools...Frankie Lymon #1) >6>7>7>7>9>20 (Que Sera Sera, Doris Day#1) and away it slipped, with Doris Day still #1 but it was really Pat Boone who shut him out at the peak of Heartbreak Hotel's assault.

I like Ghost Town by the Specials, but is it really the second best number 1 record in the history of the U.K. charts? That’s about 1400 records! Fucking Graun! Same with The Prodigy, The Human League, and Dead or Alive in the top ten. Decent songs but top 10 Nah.

You Spin Me Round is fucking genius! Though I Feel Love should have topped the list. I hadn't noticed the one song per artist rule until now, so assumed the Beatles would be no.1, probably with one of their more irksome numbers. So I'm agog as to what it will be.

The winner has been announced, LaFong. A track that has outdone your pick, You've Lost That Loving Feeling by a country mile. The greatest No 1 single is - West End Girls by The Pet Shop Boys. I kid you not. (I bought the album with this track on it and it was fun. I think I was 15. But I, er...) Numero uno link

I didn't see that coming. It's not a bad record, but I've never been a huge PSB fan. I enjoy that song once in a while, but prefer Go West, Paninaro and What Have I Done To Deserve This?

These lists are nothing more than click bait and conversation starters. Totally subjective and based more on personal taste with most people. Do you go sales based, musical complexity? influence? "pop nous"? Would most people say "Bohemian Rhapsody? My choice would be "Waterloo Sunset" (not sure it even made No.1 though). The age of the person compiling the list will be a factor as will so many other aspects to make it meaningless. Mind you "Ghost Town" would be in my top 5 for all the above criteria.

On reflection, West End Girls is a very London song, and the Guardian a very London newspaper, so it kinda makes sense. I spent the entire duration of today's run cogitating on my favourites, so expect a list at some point. I Feel Love will be no.1 for sure.
