I can't even say if I've ever heard one of these songs...

On reflection, West End Girls is a very London song, and the Guardian a very London newspaper, so it kinda makes sense. I spent the entire duration of today's run cogitating on my favourites, so expect a list at some point. I Feel Love will be no.1 for sure. 12" 15 minute version it would have to be. Italian disco meets Krautrock, utterly irresistible.

But we may not be talking of the same version, IIRC the 12" original was only around 8 minutes long.

Everything I Own by Ken Boothe is the greatest omission for me.

Always loved the Pet Shop Boys but my personal favourite is Left To My Own Devices.
A few years after their first wave of hits (which seemed untoppable) I was just about getting to the right age to be buying my own music from the local "Woolies" when it came out. Never forget first time I heard it, it just sounded like an incredible step up. However not a number one!

Not a personal favourite but isn't that Wet Wet Wet song a glaring omission from the list? It was number one for half a year or something daft like that!

Wasn’t even as good as the Trogs’ original version. Bryan Adams Everything I Do .. was No. 1 here for a week longer. Frankie Laine’s I Believe still holds the record though.

I own the 7" but sure I have a 15 minute (poss 12 min) version on a hi Def player somewhere. Will have to dig it out. I know there were some later remixes as well.

Everything I Own by Ken Boothe is the greatest omission for me. Picked up the Trojan 7" of that last month on Discogs, sounds great.

Bizarrely Wet Wet Wet are now trending on UK Twitter (for reasons unknown) which has unearthed the fact that the 15 week run at number 1 began 26 years ago yesterday! That makes me feel v old...

Everything I Own by Ken Boothe is the greatest omission for me. I prefer the Labi Siffre version (ducks for cover.)

Everything I Own by Ken Boothe is the greatest omission for me. Picked up the Trojan 7" of that last month on Discogs, sounds great. It was the third single I ever bought, in 1974. Which makes me feel rather ancient!

Everything I Own by Ken Boothe is the greatest omission for me. I prefer the Labi Siffre version (ducks for cover.) I've never heard that. I only know two of his songs, Something Inside So Strong, which makes me want to projectile vomit, and I Got The..., which is tremendous. I'll check it out.

My OFFICIAL (typing in ALLCAPS makes it so, so I learned on the old, inferior, IMDB) Top 15 UK No.1s, as I couldn't narrow it down to 10, in chronological order -
Tornados - Telstar Ken Boothe - Everything I Own Four Seasons - December ‘63 (Oh What A Night) Donna Summer - I Feel Love Althea & Donna - Uptown Top Ranking Anita Ward - Ring My Bell Dexy’s Midnight Runners - Geno S-Express - Theme From S-Express Timelords - Doctorin’ The Tardis Yazz - The Only Way Is Up Madonna - Like A Prayer 2 Unlimited - No Limit Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next All Saints - Pure Shores Tinie Tempah - Written In The Stars
Ranking them would take another three days, so sod that. I Feel Love is top, of course, with Uptown Top Ranking next.

I can't find any mention of Labi Siffre ever having recorded Everything I Own. Dunno what kind of brain fart is happening there with me! Sorry about that. I do like the original version of the song by Bread, as well as the Ken Boothe version.

I do like the original version of the song by Bread, as well as the Ken Boothe version. Which would explain why I couldn't find it on Youtube! It sounds like the kind of thing he would have recorded, as might Johnny Nash. Strangely enough, at the height of my punk (particularly Stranglers) obsession at the age of 12, I also had a Bread phase, and I still enjoy their original of that song. Speaking of unlikely reggae covers, I also liked Paul Davidson's Midnight Rider very much as a kid, an Allman Brothers song.

Tiger Feet by Mud was my first ever single (also 1974.) Think it's the only single I even bought to be honest! (may actually have been a gift) Didn't buy albums either! I wasn't that big on music other than listening to the radio.
