I don't know which songs made #1 in the UK, but there are better Jam The Jam had 4 Number Ones in the UK, 3 off which went straight into that position on the week of release. I certainly don't have any problem with Going Underground being the pick, it's a white hot diatribe. Of the Number Ones I'd personally have gone for Town Called Malice, another searing assault on Thatcher's Britain.

These list compilations are designed purely for discussion and debate, but you have to doubt credibility when something as painfully shit as Whigfield is on the list when The Hollies with I'm Alive and He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother are not...

They're a bunch of shit-stirrers imo. They just do it to get more comments.

Been following it. Don't ask me why. Biggest outrage was Spin Me Like A Record and Firestarter being top ten. But there's too many f*** ups to mention. This from a paper who omitted Angel of Harlem from U2's fifty greatest songs, a crapola band anyway with about 6 decent tunes. None of that matters. Who is gonna be #1, LaFong? Looking at the list it could be anyone. I thought maybe Come On Eileen, not my choice but going on their top picks being quite of our age. But I think it might be Rat Trap, which I'd be more than okay with. If they really don't give a f*** it might be You're The One That I Want. What say you? And don't say 'Grandad'. Earlier in the message forum I mentioned some personal favourite numbers that only reached #2, and someone with more time on his hands than Job has compiled his personal Top 100 of UK #2s (And it's rather good) Enjoyed reading that list, some great tunes stuck at number 2. Hard to believe The Who never had a No.1 Of course The Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen should be on The Guardian List since it actually did get to No.1... I'll raise your Clive Dunn and give you >

Never made #1 but this is better than most: Mental, I love them and saw them live. I also really liked Edward Tudor-Pole's work with The Sex Pistols for The Swindle tracks.

Jesus. It’s a Sin is much better anyway. And it made No. 1. Agreed!

My OFFICIAL (typing in ALLCAPS makes it so, so I learned on the old, inferior, IMDB) Top 15 UK No.1s, as I couldn't narrow it down to 10, in chronological order - Tornados - Telstar Ken Boothe - Everything I Own Four Seasons - December ‘63 (Oh What A Night) Donna Summer - I Feel Love Althea & Donna - Uptown Top Ranking Anita Ward - Ring My Bell Dexy’s Midnight Runners - Geno S-Express - Theme From S-Express Timelords - Doctorin’ The Tardis Yazz - The Only Way Is Up Madonna - Like A Prayer 2 Unlimited - No Limit Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next All Saints - Pure Shores Tinie Tempah - Written In The Stars Ranking them would take another three days, so sod that. I Feel Love is top, of course, with Uptown Top Ranking next. Manic Street Preachers - If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next - Bravo!

First 3 singles I purchased were Peaches/Go Buddy Go (Double "A" Side) - The Stranglers - John Miles - Slow Down & Pretty Vacant - The Sex Pistols. All got from Rumbelows at the top of the road where I grew up.

Yes it was a fix. It was vanquished from the top spot due to public outrage. It had outsold the Rod Stewart song considerably. One print of the chart that week didn't even have the record and band listed in the top ten, it was left blank "In March 2001, the BBC published an article that stated '"God Save the Queen" reached number one in the UK in 1977 despite being banned by the BBC, and marked a defining moment in the punk revolution".

It was the third single I ever bought, in 1974. Which makes me feel rather ancient! I bought Judy Teen in '74 which I think was my first "real" single. I liked that, but not half as much as Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me), which I bought, or Mr Soft, which I had on a K-Tel compilation. My first two purchases were Blockbuster and Seasons In The Sun, both of which I still love, though I can't deny that the latter is cheesy as hell.

I'm Alive was on my (not very) shortlist, as was Saturday Night.

I've never heard that John Miles song, but I don't mind, as I've allowed myself to be deeply prejudiced against him for the past 45 years. His atrocity Music was probably the first song I ever really detested!

Tiger Feet by Mud was my first ever single (also 1974.) Think it's the only single I even bought to be honest! (may actually have been a gift) Didn't buy albums either! I wasn't that big on music other than listening to the radio. I was never a fan of theirs, I must say. I didn't buy any LPs until Abba's first greatest hits came out, but did get K-Tel compilations from Santa, which I always enjoyed, as haphazard as they were.

I'm not sure I ever noticed any similarity, but was possibly in denial. Excitingly, when I used to do (and invariably win) pub quizzes in assorted Broughton Street hostelries in the 90s, one of our hapless rivals were called Servalan's Sex Slaves, which always amused me.

Yeah, it's pretty well known that the fix was in as it would have been the exact week of the celebrations. mind you, the charts were easy to rig back then anyway, McLaren had a list of the (supposedly secret) chart returns shops as did most record pluggers and sent out loads of old women to buy copies of GSTQ.

Someone else has spotted it! Well, that seems quite clear! And quite the comedown after listening to two Pharoah Sanders albums.
