Best Actress 3. Rosalind Russell, Auntie Mame I watched this the other day because of yours and movielover's lists. Excellent performance. Peggy Cass however didn't even remotely deserve her Oscar nomination imo. It is a performance so irritating that it is difficult to even watch.

Yes, Peggy Cass’s nomination seems ridiculous out of context. Apparently she was a hugely popular TV star in the day, so I guess her nomination was popular at the time, but it’s a silly and lame performance viewed today. However your comment reminded me of Coral Browne, whom I think is terrific in the film, a great sidekick for Russell. I’ve added her to my list.

I think she's borderline, but I had a hard job filling best actress and it was such a major, star-making role for her that I edged her into leading. Also her role is much more central than any of my supporting line-up so it seemed unfair to place her among them.

She might be more "central" than any of your supporting actress nominees, but I can't speak to that. I have only seen Wendy Hiller and obviously she is more central than her. For me either someone is the lead of a movie or they aren't. The only lead character in the movie is Frank Sinatra. Orson Welles is far more central in Touch of Evil than Shirley MacLaine is in Some Came Running and you have him supporting. I am just explaining how I do it btw, I am not telling you what your opinion should be.

Welles is an interesting one - it’s so long since I saw Touch of Evil that I don’t recall whether he seemed more of a co-lead. He certainly made a powerful impression. Some Came Running is a favourite and while MacLaine is certainly secondary to Sinatra, hers is a character and performance which I always think of when I think of the film. I may rethink the next time I watch it, which I hope is soon.
