Jim Cameron - Piranha 2 to The Terminator Yeah, that one was also on my mind when I saw the thread, but, I gotta say, I do not think Piranha II: The Spawning (1981) is terrible, but of course, it is quite a leap from that, and onto The Terminator a few years later on. I am not sure how much effort or work James actually put into that film, as I remember he said something about only so much percent of his actually made the final cut, while some other guys took over, and changed very much of the story and scenery along the way.

George Lucas - THX 1138 to American GraffitiTony Scott - The Hunger to Top GunRon Clements and John Musker - The Great Mouse Detective to The Little MermaidReally? I gotta be honest, none of those are what I would ever think of considering a "big leap" forward. In fact some of them (Top Gun and American Graffiti) are probably closer to a step backwards, maybe not commercially that is, but surely in quality, as I think THX 1138, The Hunger and The Great Mouse Detective are just as good or even better than the more famous titles mentioned coming up after them.

For George Lucas and Tony Scott's careers, it was a leap forward as they became sought-after directors ever since. Heck, even The Duellists was a really good film, but Alien became an iconic masterpiece. Now, I actually like The Great Mouse Detective. It's not a bad film at all, but it's really underrated. On the other hand, The Little Mermaid is a near-masterpiece if you ask me.

When you put it like that, I very much agree, and yeah, The Great Mouse Detective seems like one of several 80s Disney films that sadly kind of fell into the shadow to that of the Little Mermaid, which I guess was really the beginning of Disney's new golden age. However, I think the quality and creativity of the some of their earlier 80s work was not that far off, to what would came after.

Not his first movie, but I'm watching Candyman 2 and it's amazing to think Bill Condon went from THIS to Gods and Monsters.
