I really like The Sopranos Series for it`s deep character study, but the crime parts feel fictional to me, as well as the portrayal of the mob people. They just imitated it from Films like Godfather or Goodfellas, they programmed people to think that Italian mob people act like this. On the other hand The Wire feels totally realistic, it`s great novelistic storytelling.

The Sopranos was amazing and realistic without being in your face TOO realistic.
I watched two episodes of The Wire and couldn't take it anymore. Too real for me. I teach in the South Bronx and the drug and shooting crap is real there. These writers must have done a case study in the area to make it THAT realistic.

The two creators and main writers got their experiences the same way you did on the front lines And me teaching in the south Bronx where the parents pull that shit day in and day out is my front lines. The wire is too real for me. I can't watch that fault in our stars crap because I can cry for free.

In the unlikely event you were to ever watch the wire Season 4 might strike a chord The Wire (season 4) season of television series The fourth season of the television series The Wire commenced airing in the United States on September 10, 2006, concluded on December 10, 2006, and contained 13 episodes. It introduces Baltimore's school system and several middle school students while continuing to examine the remnants of the Barksdale Organization, the ascendant Stanfield Organization, the Baltimore Police Department and politicians. I can't. I already have PTSD from the south Bronx.

The Wire is the better of the two. But I prefer The Shield over both of them. How so, Jan El Senor? The Shield combines the best of both in my opinion. Character study and the grittiness of the streets. All without the annoying stereotypical Italian mob crap.... That said, all three are good shows. So it will all come down to personal preference.
