Bad goaltending wins you butkus is the point. Bad quarterbacking wins you nothing in the NFL. You can win with an average QB if you have an elite defense, just as you can win with an average goaltender. Some of the examples in this thread don't tell the whole story. Foles was an average QB, but he played at an elite level when the Eagles won the Super Bowl. If he played poorly, they wouldn't have won. He was absolutely the most important player for them in that game. Let's put it this way. In the history of either sport, how many teams were built around their QB as compared to the goaltender? No you cant really win with an average goaltender unless youre team is an offensive juggernot which few are today. In football good defences and RBs can win you games if your QB is average at best.

That Devils team also had the winningest goalie of all time in net. Cause and effect. Maybe they had the winningest goalie of all time because of the system they played in front of him. This was discussed in another post - Brodeur is top 10 all time for sure, but Roy and Hasek CARRIED their teams multiple times. The NHL had to change the rules in 2005-06 because Brodeur was so good at puckhandling in the corners and clearing the puck. Marty's trapezoid. He was like having an extra defenseman.

I can't stand Mahomes, but he alone turned this game around: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019%E2%80%9320_NFL_playoffs#AFC:_Kansas_City_Chiefs_51,_Houston_Texans_31 I was tuning in when the Texans were leading 24 - 0, was making happy German noises, and then the horror show began...instead with a chainsaw he started to slaughter them with a piece of leather, but it was equally brutal. I didn't watch the Superbowl for the first time in 20 years. Hence, I made my check in the box for the QB. The long-distance duel between Brady and Bellichick might give as an other answer.

You may have picked a wrong QB to cheer for in the future. Brady was great. But Lamar is probably not going to be so. I am a Russell Wilson fan but I readily acknowledge that Mahomes is going to end up as a great QB. Probably the greatest when he retires. Greatness is written all over him.

I am a Russell Wilson fan but I readily acknowledge that Mahomes is going to end up as a great QB. Probably the greatest when he retires. Greatness is written all over him. Don't get me wrong. I like Lamar and I really hope he will one day lift the trophy. As for Brady: I'll reckon it already as success when the Bucs make it to the play-offs, and if the Pats don't , then also also credit it as a victory of Brady over Belichick. I want Belichick gone and a new start for the Pats. Mahomes is probably one of the greatest QBs of all time and certainly a future hall of fame member, but I still hate his guts. I don't wish him ill, injuries that will end his career or tarnish a season, god forbid, but I hate his gut, and I will love to see him beaten on the pitch in a fair fight. So my hopes rest on Lamar. Wilson is imho in the league with Brees or Rodgers. Great QBs, but also ones who could never really transfer their talent and potential onto the field. When Brady did ten out of nine yards, they always fell short...not much, but enough to make the difference. But these are very personal opinions and thus feel free to disagree.

Beautifully stated.
It looks as if the smart posters have started to arrive as we now have 5 votes for NHL Goalie.

You can probably also find 5 people who’d say that Donald Trump is a humanitarian but it doesn’t mean it’s true.

You can't win with an average goaltender? The team that wins the cup every year has an elite goaltender? Again, how many teams are built around their goaltender as compared to QBs? Name me an average goalie thats won a Cup in the last 40 years?

A QB - well - sure there's a path to get to the Super Bowl (just like the Stanley Cup) - but it's pretty much 1 game under the big stage.
This Big Stage is a 7 game series where the goalie - going against another elite team and in all likelihood elite goaltender - needs to win 4 games to capture the trophy.

If your QB is having a bad passing day, there are other ways you can score. If your goalie is having a bad night youre basically fcked.

Even the casual football fan who really doesn't know much about the game can be seen walking around with a Tom Brady jersey.
QB is the most popular position in all of sports.
It's an easy pick for the laymans of the 'sports fans'

Name me an average goalie thats won a Cup in the last 40 years? Ok then, that's your answer. Every goalie who's won a cup in the last 40 years is great. With such a low bar, it's no wonder you think they're the most important player.
Feel free to answer my question anytime. How many teams are built around the goaltender compared to the QB.

This is DC Fan logic, bravo. If the NFL was a best of seven, the Patriots would be 19 time defending champs. You're goalie can shit the bed in one game and bounce back. If your QB has a bad game, your season is over.

If your QB has a bad game - he can even win the Super Bowl.
Let's go back to Super Bowl XL shall we.
Big Ben went 9 for 21 and threw 2 interceptions - he threw for 123 yards.
However Jerome Bettis, Hines Ward and Willie Parker all saved the day for Benjamin's putrid production on the field - hence winning the Super Bowl.
