Both police thrillers released in 1971. If made today, Doyle and Callahan would probably get kicked off the force for their sometimes questionable conduct.

Dirty Harry (1971) ; it's no contest for me... -Dirty Harry (1971) - 7.5-8/10 (within my Top 79 movies) -The French Connection (1971) - 5/10 (Thumbs Down (average/forgettable)) so there is a rather large gap for me as you can see
p.s. hell, the entire Dirty Harry series is better than The French Connection. plus, even my personal opinion aside... I am pretty sure Dirty Harry has more appeal with the masses(i.e. more popular) too. because I feel if someone is going to use a measuring stick for a movies worth it boils down to popularity and whether a lot of people like it to a fairly higher degree or not. like if a lot of people only mildly like a movie but not many love it, then it's good but nothing special. but if you got a good portion of the general public liking a movie to a higher degree(like where it's among their favorites) then it's more likely to be something special etc.

I dislike The French Connection.
Dirty Harry, on the other hand, is fantastic. And that's mostly down to Andrew Robinson's unhinged performance as the Scorpio Killer.

With much respect to The French Connection, it looks like Harry Callahan kicked Popeye Doyle's butt.
