Actors who are usually character actors, but not in a freakish way. They look like normal people. Nondescript, but in a good way. They're sorts that are "Everyman" in casting. It seems that they're often cast in roles other than "Everyman", though. Usually as sinister sorts. Some, like Randolph Scott, Joel McCrea, and Paul Newman actually somehow transposed everyday looks into leading "Everyman" roles
Randolph Scott Joel McCrea Gary Merrill Bradford Dillman Richard Basehart William Shatner DeForest Kelly Frank Sinatra James Cagney Humphrey Bogart William Macy Martin Milner Anthony Hopkins Paul Newman Robert Shaw Lee van Cleef
Edit add, ones I forgot: Gene Hackman Warren Oates Art Carney Richard Boone Jack Klugman Walter Matthau Brian Keith Michael Pate

William Schallert Richard Jenkins
I wouldn't say Lee Van Cleef was nondescript at all. He was menacing.

I'm not sure I understand the premise of your question. In what way are Randolph Scott, William Shatner, Frank Sinatra, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, William Macy, Lee Van Cleef, Gene Hackman and Walter Matthau nondescript? They had some of the most easily recognisable looks and/or acting styles in Hollywood history.

Quint is nondescript? Really? I'm practically gasping for oxygen here. And George Segal definitely needs to be on your mostly valid list. Bradford Dillman is an especially interesting citing. I like him a lot and he is the only actor to have appeared on my top three favorite TV shows - Charlie's Angels, Columbo & The Mary Tyler Moore Show, so, yeah, I would regard the affable Mr. Dillman as fairly recyclable. Btw, Janis Paige is the only actress to have appeared on all three of the shows.

Saying that these actors are "non-descript" is similar to your insisting that The Last of The Mohicans is a western.
