Why is it that folks that give films like this a 1 never come on the thread to give us a logical reason why they would give such a low score. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, of course, and I can understand not liking a film, but giving something a 1 ranking without some kind of explanation seems so weak to me. Am I alone for thinking this? I gave my reasons for the low score.

To me, it is weird when people rate a movie 1 so often. I see that a lot when I read the reviews in IMDb that seem like that when the person don't like the movie, it is the "worst movie ever made" and an automatic 1. That is why you will see an inflated rating of 1 in most movie rating distribution.
I rated about 5000 films, and I have less than 50 movies rated 1. If a person likes movies, almost any movie, I am sure there are some redeemable features. I didn't even rate Cats a 1, as terrible as it was.
Yeah, I understand the flaws of the movie, and the movie may not be everyone's cup of tea. So most other ratings I can understand and are justified, even the rating of 5. I won't take the 1 that seriously. It just tells me that the person didn't like the movie and wanted to express the dislike to the extreme. Of course, they are people who may hate the movie that much that the 1 one genuine.

Liked the first half, when it's genuinely creepy and scary. Why close such a huge hotel during the winter? That would have been a great time for all jet-set fancy alpine skiiers since it's located at a very attractive location near mountains... 8/10 I too prefer the first half. The opening sequence with the use of Dies irae on the soundtrack, the kid pedalling down the hall, the scene where Danny’s shining is explained – all genuinely creepy.
But as it goes on it starts to suffer from lack of a proper plot. Jack is insane, he grabs an axe, he wants to kill everyone, and that’s it basically. Though he doesn’t seem to be in much of a rush. Like taking his time chatting to the bartender.
The hotel is obviously the main character, but this also means that there is no one to really identify with. This perfectly fits Kubrick's famously cold and distant filmmaking style, but there's just a sense that the movie is emotionally vapid.
