In the 1980s and 1990s, when designer thrillers were popular at the cinema and on home video, critics said certain performers made the screen sizzle. I'm not sure when this began, but I do recall Kathleen Turner being described as a screen sizzler who could fire up the screen even in cold noir settings - which sounded quite remarkable at the time.
