Returns, but even as a Returns defender I'm becoming more and more down on it.

Returns because at least it was trying to be in the Donnerverse. MOS was just character assassination.

Pretentious pacifism vs mindless violence. Eh, I'll go with Returns. Both above all else seemed to be trying to humanize Superman, and I think Returns did a better job. And I overall liked the cast better.

Man of Steel. At least things were happening in that movie.

I'm not keen on either movie to be honest, but if I had to choose I'd go with Man of Steel. Zod's arrival in Earth's orbit is excellently done and I liked the idea and design of the terraforming machines.
Superman Returns was bland and an ill-conceived attempt to revive the Chrisopher Reeve series of films but without any of their inherent charm.

Man of Steel.
Love it or hate it, at least Man of Steel stand on its own, even if doesn't measure up to the first two Christopher Reeve films.
But anytime you try to remake or replace Superman III and IV, even as subpar and bad as those films are respectively, you're still trying to pretend you're Christopher Reeve and Richard Donner (in terms of trying to pretend you're doing the Richard Donner version of Superman III).
That was a big, epic fail on Bryan Singer's part, after successfully bringing the X-Men to live-action life on the big screen.
Brandon Routh was just doing a job, but he's a great actor and at least he got to show his true talents starring for several seasons on DC's Legends of the Universe, as well as other films and television shows.
