Try to avoid best films or outright favourites... & box office shouldn't decide this either.
If all these came out in one summer, or 1 decade of summers, etc...

Jaws, Star Wars, E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, Batman, and Jurassic Park led to many things in common that shaped the "summer blockbuster": they became instantly iconic, were the highest-grossing film of the year (aside from Batman), had toy deals and other merchandise tie-ins, had cross-promotional advertising campaigns, and had high-concept ideas.

Those are my 5 here too. Even their posters remain some of the more enticing 'what's in store' marketing...

I'd say Independence Day quite easily. It has more spectacle than any of the others and is a bigger crowdpleaser followed closely by The Avengers.

Jaws completely changed the landscape for big studios and release practices in the summer, so that simply has to be top of any list of this kind.
I like Archelaus post, you can't get away from those films that had all the tie-ins that made them pop culture raves. I rewatched Batman 89 last week and I still remember that every bus shelter near me had a Bat Logo Poster, the T-Shirts were rampant, stuff like toy torches that shone the Bat Logo on your wall and etc.
Lest we forget the millions of cuddly ET dolls that surfaced and etc! It's important, it may seem like standard practice these days, to have the marketing products in full effect, but in the 70s and 80s it was still a big thing, and a conglomerate film studios dream. Now it's standard procedure for even sub standard releases in summer.

Jaws, easily. It was the first "must see" movie. I can remember being so damned mad that I couldn't go see it in 1975. I had the reputation of being "gory", which I could have dealt with (I was 12) but my snot nosed brother HAD to go and he was too young. I was a social outcast because I didn't see Jaws

Jaws Star Wars Batman Jurassic Park The Avengers
All of these films were revolutionary for cinema in some way. Jaws invented the blockbuster; Star Wars took sci-fi spectacle to previously unseen levels; Batman resurrected the superhero genre (and basically reinvented it); Jurassic Park proved what CGI was capable of; The Avengers shattered box office expectations and proved the concept of a shared universe to be highly profitable (and studios have been trying to copy the formula ever since).

I like the logic used for each choice, and agree with all of them. I did put Raiders in over Batman (though I like that movie a lot and can't argue your rationale for including it). My reasoning is that Raiders is basically the grand-daddy of the modern-day action movie; even though it might seem somewhat slow-paced now, for 1981 it whipped along at breakneck speed like nothing audiences had seen before.
