My daughter gave me a garden kit with prickly lemon cucumber seeds.
They all germinated so I have lots of runners all over the place. There must be 1000 flowers! So it will be a large crop.
I picked two yesterday. They are so refreshing g. Any gardening/harvesting for you?

I've never had much luck growing cucumbers. I've tried each of the past 4 years and I'll get 3-4 giant ones per season, that's it, and it takes them much longer to ripen than I expect them to. Each year, I say I'm not going to pick them, just let them stay and then I pick it and it's just so bitter.
Other than that, we have great luck with mojito mint, parsley and thyme (same plants for 4 years now), and our tomatoes are always awesome although we're still a few weeks away from the harvest. We also planted new basil this year and overnight we have a giant basil bush. Pesto for days.

Three radishes harvested from the carrot row. They are planted there to mark where the darn carrot row is because the stupid carrots are so &^^%## slow to germinate.

If they get too large the plants "think" that their job of making seeds is finished and they stop producing. Lots of little ones beats a couple of big ones.
I just finished the last of the last jar of sweet refrigerator pickles made in September and had to break down and buy some Vlasic chips. The cuke vines are just starting to break the surface .. no real leaves yet !

The cuke vines are just starting to break the surface .. no real leaves yet ! I'll buy cucumbers, onions and carrots and pickle those, but I've never nailed down a recipe that I love. A jar of Ba-Tampte pickles (the kosher dills and the half sours being my personal faves) are better than anything I've ever made on my own.

klawrencio79I have tried every recipe possible for making dill pickles and every trick in every book ... nothing works ! It's something in the water because it's a commonality in the area. These refrigerator sweet chips are pretty awesome. The directions were in one of those "fireman's wives" cookbooks which also recommended canning in the oven
When you buy the cucumbers ... do you get "pickles" or table / salad cukes ?

When you buy the cucumbers ... do you get "pickles" or table / salad cukes ? I've tried both, and I haven't really noticed much of a difference between the pickle ones and the persian mini-ones (which are my favorite in general and I tear through a pack of those every other day). I don't know if it's my spice mix, the amount of time I spend, or what. Alton Brown had a great episode of Good Eats on pickling but it involved letting the brine mold over in a closet. I've made kombucha which kinda does that but for some reason going that far with the pickles gives me the willies.

klawrencio79 I plant ones that are primarily for pickling and "ok" for fresh eating. I did brined dills in a crock one year... mulched the lot ! UGH !

I wonder if that is why they grow so well here. My tomatoes look gorgeous! I keep looking for a hint of red!
