Once again, I completely neglected the time as the host of this game, just proving how awful I would be in Alex Trebek's shoes.
8 votes Murder!, 8 votes Young and Innocent, 6 votes TCAT, 6 votes The Wrong Man, 5 votes Lifeboat, 5 votes Suspicion, 4 votes Saboteur, 4 votes MWKTM '34, 4 votes Vertigo, 4 votes Shadow of a Doubt, 3 votes North by Northwest, 3 votes Foreign Correspondent, 3 votes Frenzy, 2 votes Lifeboat, 2 votes Dial M for Murder, 2 votes Notorious, 1 vote Sabotage.
Strange situation, here: tie for first and tie for second, meaning that, for better or worse, all four movies go. Wow.

O.K. I am just about set on my rankings for the rest of the films-except Vertigo? I am trying hard to push it beyond #6, it is not my favorite Hitchcock film but I respect it for what it is. I think that Jimmy Stewart tries to over-act against type and I find the characters frequently dull and unappealing, the physiological aspects of the script are about as subtle as a blow to the head, on the other-hand, we had some land-mark (Dolly-Zoom) camera-techniques, a great movie score, some incredible shots of San Francisco and a great opening sequence. One of my favorite Kim Novak roles. And it is now the majority critics darling of the moment.
I don't see the revolutionary aspects in Vertigo like I see in Psycho? say, versus Citizen Kane-which critics have the balls to rank Vertigo above which is filled with technical tricks rather than landmark directing? though I like the Third Man better than Kane, the dream sequence is rather annoying after the first viewing. The rear-screen projections could also have been better managed considering the tech of the time, I have seen better.
Is Jimmy Stewart too old for this part? to play opposite Kim Novak or maybe I don't buy into them? or is the pacing of the film just too slow at times? Something always bothers me here, or is the plot simply being milked for an ending that is not that great of a pay-off. Is Jimmy Stewart just phoning in his previous acting role from Rear Window, maybe I am being too hard on Mister Jimmy.
So is Vertigo a Suspense? that's not that suspenseful or a Thriller? that does not have a conventional thriller plot? Or Hitchcock's own study upon psychosis and obsession? All the above? Wish I had time now to re-watch this movie, so I could enter deeper into deconstruction, but my last viewing impressions will have to stand for now, unless someone wants to add to moving it upward?
Any opinions?
5.Sabotage 1936 4.Saboteur 1942 3.Lifeboat 1944 2.The Man Who Knew Too Much 1934 1. Frenzy 1972

Round CLOSED!
Our losers are therefore MWKTM '34, Sabotage, Saboteur, and (wow!) Vertigo.
Very interesting--I would not have expected Vertigo to go so early.

Ver to go out! I thought that would be a stayer to the end. So much for my gambling instincts.

What happens if when we get to about 5 or 6 remaining they all go out on a tie?

What happens if when we get to about 5 or 6 remaining they all go out on a tie? No; when we get down to only a few, the voting format will change to one at a time again. When it gets between two, then you will vote for the movie you want to keep (as in Survivor, which inspired this whole thing).

5. Lifeboat(a classic, that I really feel no need to watch again- unfortunately for me? perhaps). 4..Frenzy(something's gotta give, this is so darn close now, oh-hell-no!!! ) 3. Dial M for Murder (Has a few flaws-Grace Kelly appears a bit cold and amateurish in this role and it can feel a bit stagey at times/ But Ray Milland's performance is Stellar, which evens things out, please forgive the nitpicking). 2. Suspicion (great film/admittedly weak ending) 1. Rear Window (would rather re-watch than Vertigo/Jimmy Stewart is great in this part). On the re-watch list/review later on the classic's forum.- The Lodger, Rope, Shadow of a Doubt, Frenzy, Vertigo. A strong list regardless, Vertigo, probably should be in the top 5, like Citizen Kane, it is a historic piece of film-making, but Citizen Kane is also not a favorite film great to look at and study after the first watching. I am disappointed that 'To Catch a Thief' did not stay long but will admit that the film has style over substance, my kind of style though. Here I stand for now, all great movies in their own right, would be a totally awesome weeks viewing! North by Northwest 1959 The 39 Steps 1935 Strangers on a Train 1951 Psycho 1960 Foreign Correspondent 1940 Notorious 1946 The Lady Vanishes 1938 Rebecca 1940 Shadow of a Doubt 1943 Rope 1948
