Two from recent years:
^ Opening sax riff seems to encapsulate the yearning for escaping to something better. Whole song maintains that vibe of trying to escape to something better but just beyond reach, probably because of how deftly it avoids ever hitting the tonic but is constantly hinting at it.
^ This one nails that feeling of when you're just on the verge of adulthood and scared to death that you're on your own.
And a slightly older one:
^ Similar to the CRJ above, but something about this one is so bittersweet. Full of beauty and wonderful but also an intangible sadness and unfulfilled desire.

They're getting old. Pinnick will be 70 in a few months. His live voice isn't what it used to be, but it's tolerable and he's still an incredible bassist. Gaskill's still always spot on despite his recent heart attacks. Ty Tabor, however...well, he pisses me off because I know he can do better than the lackluster performances he brings to the KX shows now. I've always loved the cover of OOTSP, by the way. That's the lower half of Texas at the bottom, and I like to believe that's the Houston skyline in the background since that's where it really all started.

I have the same thought about a lot of my favorite bands/artists that are getting older: Dylan, Iron Maiden, King Crimson, AC/DC, etc. I was going to cross Steely Dan off the list last month but, well, we know what's going on. Never noticed that was the lower half of Texas on that cover!

Even studio albums are being bumped, but I don't understand why. Funny that it has a mountain in it. Must be El Paso. haha

The song by itself is really good, but the fact that it accompanies one of the most amazing mindfuck sequences in film history is what makes it so powerful: (This is the song in the context of the film with the dialogue muted, though the subtitles are available) Somehow, it seems to be both completely inappropriate given what's happening, but also bizarrely appropriate at the same time.... maybe that's The End of Evangelion in a nutshell!

I'm a sucker for songs that have such a dissonance between the lyrics and the music. The depressing lyrics gel so well with the happy, hopeful sound of the music. And, as you said, it makes the perfect compliment for the Third Impact...maybe the best representation of the apocalypse committed to film.

Lady Jane, by rolling stones of course. Because the meaning of the song is disturbing.

Two from the Beach Boys that really strike a chord with me.

I know in film that dissonance is called counterpoint, so with music I just call it "songwriting counterpoint" (since there's already a musical counterpoint that's a completely different thing). I even wrote about it a bit when I reviewed Hayley Williams's recent solo album, since she (and her old band Paramore) love that device. Here's a good example: Are you a recent NGE fan? If so I've written several essays on that series and film attempting to explain what it's all about. I don't know if you'd be interested (no offense if you aren't).

Considering Dylan just released his new album, it occurred to me that he may be the ultimate example when it comes to evocative songwriting. Even when you have no clue what he's talking about, it sounds really important:

Also likely my vote for best song of the last decade, period.

Not really. I watched the series back in the early 2000's and wasn't a huge fan of it. I saw it again recently and...overall, I gained a better appreciation for it, but it's still not very satisfying for me. However, I've always enjoyed EoE, just for it's insanity.
