and holy shit, the son character is even worse than I remembered. Acts like a total brat during a disaster situation, says absolutely idiotic things like "we should try to find one of these things and kill it", and then abandons his dad and little sister to run off into a war zone and miraculously manages to survive and even get to Boston before Cruise and Fanning do.
it's funny that apparently the Cruise character is supposed to be the unsympathetic one because he is supposedly a bad father, yet all I saw was a man putting up with these two ungrateful brats desperately trying to get them to safety
I have no problem in saying the son character ruins the entire film

Might have been better without any annoying kids.

The annoying kids is part of why I like the movie as much as I do. It would be easy to show a father fighting to protect his wonderful kids.

I love this version a lot! Love the effects, and the kids were . . . kids! I know there is a contingent that complains about Dakota's screaming, but that's what little kids do!
The only downside was the cheesy ending. Otherwise, love it!

This movie truly sucked. Spielberg confirmed he was no longer the great Spielberg anymore with this travesty.

I hated the daughter more. Despite their presence, I liked it alright. The depiction of the tripods remain impressive and their sound design is haunting.

Yeah, I think Spielberg was letting the 9/11 allegory get in the way of logic there. What's this punk ass dork think he's gonna do against aliens? Goes charging at them like they're the yankees on his Alabama ranch. Bitch, please.
Annoying kids are a Spielberg mainstay, but I don't think any approach the annoyance of Dakota Fanning and Goku here. Cruise should have pulled a Dreyfus and ditched them.

I don't believe Cruise could kill Robbins in real life. Should have been after his kid is singing, we see Robbins come out and say: "I'm your daddy now!"
I liked the look of the machines and the sound effects for them, otherwise fuck it.

I used to think the movie was solid for years until a re-watch in July 2019 and I no longer like the movie. but it's not that aspect that shuts it down as the overall style of the movie etc just don't work for me like it used to and the CGI is showing it's age a bit etc.
p.s. still, NO ONE can beat Tom Cruise in terms of overall filmography quality as his longevity and volume of quality movies is 2nd to none.

The daughter I feel is at least acting somewhat believable for a little girl. Though I thought it was funny she was kind of set up as a “wise beyond her years” type kid in her introduction but just turns into a screaming girl for the rest of the movie

I keep forgetting David Harbour, Channing Tatum, and Amy Ryan were in this.

I'd love to know if there was an earlier draft where the kid doesn't turn up alive at the end because his being at the grandparents was just ridiculous. This was not something Spielberg of the Jaws era would have done.
