Oh yes, I’m shocked an American movie had an American star! Especially one of the biggest stars in Hollywood who also produced the movie and is likely the reason the movie got made and was a draw for cinema audiences across the globe I can't tell if you're doing that on purpose or not, since you're describing the mentality I was criticizing before. It’s in that top ten grossing films of all time surpassing most actual Japanese films Ummm... Box office results don't actually reflect how liked or disliked a movie is. explain to me how the movie could enter the top ten grossing films ever there unless, shock, people liked it

I agree box office results aren't the best way to engage how a much is perceived by the general audience (the Transformers films made a ton of money and they're quite hated by many). Regarding how the Japanese may feel about the movie itself and the "white savior" trope I would have to look into it, but I do know the Japanese frequently like putting in caucasian characters in their JRPGS (though that's probably mainly to appeal to western audiences). I wouldn't be too surprised though if they weren't too happy about the inclusion of Tom Cruise in the movie though (they're very culturally conservative). Tom Cruise is actually one of the biggest stars in Japan. He even has a day named for him www.hollywood.com/movies/cruise-day-declared-in-japan-57163300/

The same is true for Indiana Jones ToD. White liberals complaining its a white saviour movie and insults indian culture. When actual Indians are asked...they love the movie!

I know they seem to have an odd infatuation with Schwarzenneger:

A movie can’t become one of the top grossing films in their country unless people are spreading good word and are constantly going to the film week after week. The Last Samurai was not some kind of franchise movie that automatically attracts audiences. Yes I’m sure the film of his they dislike is his highest grossing and most popular release

The Last Samurai was not some kind of franchise movie that automatically attracts audiences. Word of mouth, as well as reviews and awards, are a factor, but it's mostly marketing and star power (which Tom has, as you already pointed out). Just because something or someone tells you something is good, it doesn't automatically mean you'll like it too. It just means that you're willing to take the chance.

Ir's because The Last Samurai is a White Savior Film. All the Samurai needed to triumph was a white guy to lead them. Total bullshit. 1. The Samurai didn't triumph
2. He gave them info about their enemies but Cruise learned far more from the Samurai then they learned from him. He ended up totally adopting their culture.
3. The movie is mostly a diatribe against Western culture and it's impact on Japan. If this movie is racist against anyone it's White people.

I saw The Last Samurai years and years ago and barely remember a frame of it. Obviously, the impression I still had of the film was wrong. Thanks to all who chimed in about the film's plot.

This trigger warning business is getting out of hand.

Seems like they are applying this to every movie ever made because anything can offend anybody these days. I guess they should keep going, look at how triggered the people in this thread are.

I always enjoyed this film. I believed it was about change and acceptance and history.
Tom was not the Last Samurai.
