I’m reading Superman Earth One and Clark goes looking for a job at Neodyne Industries and is told that their R&D is researching a method to derive electricity from salt water and Clark immediately writes down an equation which solves it. Are they suggesting that he’s a super-genius or is it from Kryptonian archives?

Superman possesses kryptonian intelligence and technology. Under a yellow sun, he can think faster than a supercomputer. Even without a yellow sun, his cognitive abilities are much higher than a normal human's. ... In terms of raw brainpower, Superman is said to possess a 10th level intellect.

Well, in Superman (1978), he spends a long period of time being educated by the hologram of his late father, Jor-El. Given how advanced Kryptonian science and technology was in comparison with Earth's, it's safe to assume that Superman possesses a significantly greater level of scientific knowledge than most humans. He's undoubtedly highly intelligent anyhow, but possessing knowledge millenia in advance of the rest of the population is bound to give one certain natural advantages.

In the comics Superman is very intelligent. Something which the films rarely utilize which irritates me. I remember there was one animated film that made him so dumb that he legit thought a good solution to the situation was to simply "move the planet". I guess they dumb him down to make Batman look smarter.

Or it's to give Luthor an advantage over him because super intelligence is really all Luthor has. And wealth, if it's modern Luthor. But yes, there's no reason why Superman shouldn't be super intelligent too. It's ultimately the writers' limitations.
