(in order)
-Harry and Tonto -A Woman Under the Influence -The Godfather: Part II -The Conversation -Chinatown -Zandy's Bride -Alice in the Cities -Scenes From a Marriage -Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
If 1974 was a weak year, what about the last 40 years?

Hi mortsahlfan Just me being grumpy as usual. But the '70s are my least favorite movie decade. Too big a task to sift through all the succeeding 45 years (not counting 2020 which ain't done yet) but my gut-feeling is that most of them would have yielded better movies than 1974. If you care to nominate any three years since at random, I will see if I can list a better Top Ten for each of them than 1974 can boast. No-one else challenged my assertion. I guess they think it is too self-evident to be worth commenting.

So what are your favorite decades? Personally, I'd rank mine 70s, 60s, 50s, 40s, 30s, in that order. I don't think 1974 is the greatest year, but I could have named more good movies.
Because I'm so tired, I'll look back on this site to see any years of favorite movies so I can simply copy/paste.
1970 Sunflower Five Easy Pieces La Horse Joe Hope A Walk In The Summer Rain Lovers And Other Strangers I Never Sang For My Father (too many more to list)
Favorite Documentary "Hospital" "Seven-Up" (ongoing)
1952 (in order)
Umberto D Ikiru Come Back, Little Sheba Viva Zapata! Deadline - U.S.A. The Quiet Man Singin' In The Rain The Bad and the Beautiful Beware, My Lovely High Noon My Cousin Rachel Forbidden Games Europe '51
1964 My favorite thing ever from this year is the documentary, "Seven-Up" which is still going!
Woman in the Dunes Onibaba The Visit The Pumpkin Eater Seance in the Wet Afternoon Seven Days in May The Best Man Marriage Italian Style Gertrud Zorba the Greek

1974 poll going til 28 June if anyone interested
Looks to be a Godfather/Chinatown standoff. I'm sure CHINATOWN won on the old imdb... but my memory has proved faulty before ...

The 70’s was about the last decade when I saw most of the Oscar nominees in a theater first run. There were more disappointments than thrills but here are some that I liked then and still like

Harry and Tonto Murder on the Orient Express Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore Young Frankenstein Blazing Saddles The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three Benji (hey, this was one of Hitchcock's personal favorites) That's Entertainment (sure, it was just a clip collection, and its somber tribute to Judy Garland seems a bit much considering MGM is the studio which helped damage her in the first place. But it introduced me to some great musicals, and helped me avoid having to watch some dreary ones, too, by just showing the good parts)
Special mention: Animal Crackers (made in 1930, but not shown on TV or in theaters until 1974 due to copyright issues, so I got to to see it that year in its theatrical re-release)
