Definitely a knock out for Dylan. Very Disappointing Young offering I thought.

Never heard a Neil Young album before this one. I liked Star of Bethlehem, We Don't Smoke It No More and White Line. I played Florida twice and am still none the wiser - I'm missing something, but that's no surprise not being a NY listener. I preferred the Bob Dylan album. It excited me. My Own Version of You, I've Made Up My Mind..., Goodbye Jimmy Reed, Key West are favourites. And the 2nd disc (Murder Most Foul) plays out well for a 15 minute number. This song sounds more compelling with each long listen. His voice is good throughout the album, especially his pronunciation, very little drawling. So of the two albums, I like it better. No deep intricate analysis - those days are gone, now I'm in it just for the moment as it takes me.

Well, it's not "new" Neil Young, these are songs recorded over 40 years ago.
I'm a Neil fanatic, so I'm biased. Homegrown is 70's Neil Young, so obviously it's very good. I wouldn't put it in the same class as Neil's best 70's output (Tonight's the Night, On The Beach, Zuma, etc), but it's still very good.
The Dylan stuff that I've heard so far has been fantastic. "Murder Most Foul" is very long, but really should be listened to by all. Make up your own mind, but at least give it a listen, Bob is saying some very important things in that tune. I've heard a couple of other songs, and am looking forward to listening to the whole album.

I'm not gonna comment on your analysis, but I gotta ask, you've never heard a Neil Young album before? I'm a Neil nut, so obviously my opinion is a little skewed, but the guy's been making music for over 50 years, some of it pretty popular. You never gave one of his albums a listen? Don't be offended, I'm not trying to diss you or anything, I'm just kind of surprised.

I must disagree, if you're referring to Homegrown. I think it's really good, I prefer those versions of the already recorded songs, and the previously unheard ones are good too. I like the Dylan album as well, with the slight quibble that the JFK song is far too long. Agree on the JFK song, but was hugely disappointed with "Homegrown", maybe it will grow on me. Mind you I have to go back to "Le Noise" to the last Young album I immediately loved.

Here's a great film of Neil doing the whole of Le Noise for those not aware of it...

I haven't gotten around to going through Young's discography yet, but the new Dylan is excellent. I've considered writing a full review for it.
