Wow, I'm actually watching the very, VERY first episode ever. Season 1, Episode 1: The New Housekeeper.
They had a housekeeper named Rose who left them to get married. Andy was performing the ceremony, and they went away on their honeymoon. Andy announced the arrival of Aunt Bea, and Opie is upset at this Aunt Bea person intruding, and vows he won't love anyone as much as he loves Rose.
Also, I was wondering why Barney got the job as deputy, being as he's such a goofy numbskull. Come to find out, he's Andy's cousin!? Did anyone else know that?
In the beginning, Barney's trying so hard to be really professional and he's actually pretty courteous and determined to prove himself, saluting Andy and everything. My goodness they're so young!

Yes. I believe it’s the only time in the series that the cousin relationship is mentioned.

In the very early episodes, they had Barney kind of being the straight guy to Andy's goofy character.
Everyone quickly realized how funny Don Knotts could make the Fife character, and to Andy Griffith's credit, decided to kind of switch it to where Andy played his character more straight and Knotts being the funny one.

I saw that first episode not long ago. In the beginning Andy was real country talking in the later episodes he lost his country accent for the most part.

Yeah, I did notice that Andy seemed far more "goofy" in this episode, and not his traditional straight-man self. It was very peculiar. To be fair, when Knotts gets really goofy, he goes far too over the edge for my liking (I'm not a fan of slapstick and he verges into that territory while being far too loud). But that was the style back then.

They're showing them in order, so after Season 1, Episode 1, and then Episode 2, right now I am watching Season 1, episode 3 and they are making references to the first two episodes which is great.
It's really cool to see the very, very beginning of this series. I've never seen any of the early episodes before so I never saw how this all got launched.
In this episode there's an exceptional guitar player they're featuring. Really, really good! I wonder if he was anyone particularly famous.

James Best who starred in numerous films and television shows over his long career. Probably most famous for three episodes of The Twilight Zone ('Jess-Belle', 'The Last Rites of Jeff Myrtlebank', 'The Grave') as well as his role as Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane in The Dukes of Hazzard.

That's not James Best actually playing the guitar, you can tell by the camera shots Best doesn't really play guitar. They probably just hired a professional and shot close-ups of his hands as he played. Still a fun episode, and Best is great in it. He was also in a couple of great Gunsmoke episodes. Now the episodes with the Darlings, those guys were the real thing. Played by the Dillards, a real bluegrass playing family.

But that was the style back then. Andy Griffith made his career playing a goofy country bumpkin. Kind of a precursor to Jed Clampett. He had a very funny routine called "What it was was football". He took the character into movies with No Time For Sergeants, a Gomer Pyle precursor. Don Knotts played a role as an Army psychologist driven nuts by Griffith's character, Then he took the bumpkin down a dark path in Elie Kazan's A Face in the Crowd. He might have had a very good film career if not for the Andy Griffith Show. And I don't think that TAGS would have been as good as it was if Griffith had played for the laughs and Knotts played the straight man. Knotts won umpteen Emmy's and Griffith was never even nominated.

The one I saw last night, Ellie ran for councilman (and the men were in an uproar because everyone knows a woman's place is in the kitchen, and trying on pretty hats and winder shoppin' an' stuff).

Now there's an Ed Sawyer, A Stranger in Town who seems to know everyone in town, including which rooms have been painted, and he can identify which twins are which.
Oh, and Floyd the barber is a different Floyd (I like the later Floyd much better).
Andy's accent is so thick in these earlier episodes! So different. And definitely so silly. (See what I did there, "silly"!) lol

Tonight's the first one with the "real" Floyd the barber.
There's a movie director here, scouting out Mayberry.
