泣きたい私は猫をかぶる (A WHISKER AWAY) starts as a drama about real problems in which the magical elements are secondary, but the 3rd act transitions into full-on fantasy adventure. While it feels like a different movie, it doesn't cease to entertain. In fact, this is an overall well-made production. I really appreciate how certain things are revealed by moving the order of the scenes around instead of doing a "Gotcha!" moment (proof that they trust that the audience is smart). I know the premise (a girl named Miyo "Muge" Sasaki can transform into a cat whenever she wants to and she uses the opportunity to get closer to her crush, Kento Hinode) sounds like a problematic romance, but it's complicated. At the end, Hinode doesn't act like it's a big deal and he even confesses his love for her. While it would've been better for him to accept Miyo's apology, at least she apologized. I've seen bad movies with similar situations where the Miyo-like character is portrayed as the hero(ine) and no one points out that what they do is wrong. Instead, Miyo realizes her mistakes all on her own. During the epilogue, Hidone playfully does to Miyo the same things she did when she tried to draw attention. This idea works (since there's now a balance in their relationship), but it would've worked more if it had been used in a story about an extrovert and an introvert instead of a story about a person who can't handle rejection. Again, I prefer a movie that doesn't properly explore the layers of the characters than a movie that outright ignores them. Looking at the big picture, Miyo & Hinode changed for the better. 8/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
