NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 1968 (the story of 7 people hiding in a farmhouse from zombies ghouls) is too slow and repetitive, even for the decade. Even though the low budget held it back in terms of cinematography, camera work, etc., George A. Romero's directing is good enough for it to be genuinely scary at times. Among the survivors, Ben (the then rare black hero) comes off as the best character. After watching so many annoying and/or boring people throughout the sequels and remakes, I like him even more in retrospective. 6/10 After making a horror movie, George wanted to make an action/horror movie. The difference is that, in that genre, the main characters aren't just victims; they fight back... but they still have to be inferior to the threat. During the majority of DAWN OF THE DEAD 1978, the survivors feel in control of each situation. In fact, there are many moments where the zombies (yes, now they're called that) get near them and they just push them away. Due to these issues (how ironic that the directing (again, not the same as technical quality) and the writing in this sequel (made 10 years later and with a bigger budget) is worse), there's no suspense. The goofy make-up doesn't help. A couple of moments during the last part (including the use of that ear poison Herbert Chappell called THE GONK) suggest that this was also meant to be partly a comedy, but they feel out of place because the story's overall tone isn't consistent. 1/10 DAY OF THE DEAD 3/10 RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART I 3/10 RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART II 1/10 NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 1990 4/10 RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART III 1/10 DAWN OF THE DEAD 2004 7/10 LAND OF THE DEAD 1/10 RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART IV: NECROPOLIS 0/10 RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART V: RAVE TO THE GRAVE 0/10 DAY OF THE DEAD PART 2: CONTAGIUM 0/10 DIARY OF THE DEAD 3/10 SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD 1/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.

Your list is difficult to argue with. I have two in my loop. Original, a classic. And 2004, I think is better than most think, I guess. Over the top, but well done IMO. I'm happy with those two. Found the others..... yeah...

You didn’t find the blocking the mall entrance doors with trucks set-pieces in the original Dawn to be suspenseful? Looks like we differ largely on the original Dawn. Compared to the cautious uncertainty of Night, I actually like how Dawn had that ‘sense’ of control with its characters... because in the end it was actually their own downfall. So in a way they were inferior to the threat, because they were riding their luck. But things could quickly escalate into dangerous territory. Thinking you’re in control meant the confidence to take a risk, even an unwise one. Two squad guys who know how to handle themselves, breathes confidence in flyboy and his girlfriend to follow suit. So they become comfortable when things go to plan, however this also can lead to sloppiness. It’s human nature when things come easy, and this open up possibilities to mistakes. Most likely fatal in these circumstances. I think Romero did a good job implementing the concept. For me the suspense came from the unpredictable nature of waiting for someone to slip up as the danger was always there e.g Peter and the trucks. It was like waiting out a ticking time bomb. Even flyboy underestimated the threat of the zombies when the bikies entered the mall. His focus shifted away from the zombies... because they were slow and easy to dodge/push over... but the real threat were the numbers scattered over various spaces. Overwhelming numbers to draw your focus and this left you vulnerable to a loose roaming zombie. It only took one false step. So controlling the mall was important, but also it had consequences by leading to a false sense of mind that you’re in control and the entitlement which came from it. His mindset was still in that mode during the chaos, which wasn’t ideal. He paid for not adapting to priorities and changing circumstances. So I feel it was deliberate by Romero to hopefully lull the audience into the same mindset. It worked for me. Looks like you missed out on Steve Miner’s Day of the Dead remake with Mena Suvari and Ving Rhames.

My brother and I LOVE the '68 and '90 Night of the Living Dead and Return 1 and 2, my brother has seen Dawn, Day and Land. We haven't seen the newer remake/reboots of Night, my brother however had a funny theory if they ever remake it again. That the reason Johnny should be driving Barbra to the cemetery is because she got drunk the night before and doesn't remember where she left her car.

Not really a 'franchise' again, but closer this time.
Everyone knows that the first two are classics, and Day of the Dead has its merits. Return of the Living Dead is loads of fun, but I was never really fond of the sequel, and I don’t think I ever saw the third one.
I don't think I ever gave Savini's Night of the Living Dead remake a fair shake, but I'll reconsider it since a lot of people seem to speak rather highly of it.
The Zack Snyder Dawn of the Dead remake is decent. It's got some cool imagery, but some of the style is hollow and shallow in the way that Zack Snyder movies often are. He doesn't have any of the commentary or point of view that Romero had in mind.
These later in-name-only movies like the Day of the Dead with Ving Rhames, I've heard and can assume are awful.

OP I think your criticisms are pretty harsh. If you don't like George Romero and his invention of zombies, don't watch them. Or as I do, don't talk about a bad movie when I know one. I watched the movie "Children of the Living Dead." I'm sure only a handful of people here have seen that movie. You want to talk about God awful, that's it, lol. Sad, because I love Tom Savini. It was just so bad and I think the actors did it for a paycheck only. You were on par with the ratings of Romero's last ditch effort zombie movies. Not bad, just the way it goes when you get older, actor or director. Is actor Nicolas Cage making award winning films? It's the same for other great horror directors as well. Do you think John Carpenter went out with a bang with his movies? I like to appreciate what we get and not judge my own expectations. I'll give my quick ratings of my favorite "Dead" movies (not all Romero's):1968 "Night of the Living Dead" - A classic, I don't have enough text to say why. 8.5/10 1972 "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" - The ending gets a bit muddled, but I still like it a lot till this day 7/10 1978 "Dawn of the Dead" - Another classic. It had bad make-up effects, but is its plot awesome! 9.5/101985 "Day of the Dead" - As low budget as it was, sorry for Romero, it was amazingly creepy and suspenseful. 8.5/10 1985 "The Return of the Living Dead" - Great spin-off comedic approach, that worked with 80's pop culture. 7/101988 "Return of the Living Dead II" - Run-on guts, more comedic, but meh, it's still more horror than stuff released today. 5/10 1990 "Night of the Living Dead" - Respectable remake, not the best, but a nice fun '90s take on the classic zombie story. 6.5/101993 "Return of the Living Dead III" - Actress Melinda Clarke's dedication, says it all. 7.5/10 2004 "Dawn of the Dead" - People thought I was crazy buying tickets to this and not "Passion of the Christ." Very fun remake. 7.5/102004 "Shaun of the Dead" - I'll include this because George Romero loved it, marking it one of his favorite zombie films. 7.5/10 2005 "Land of the Dead" - Low but solid budget, and still able to show Romero's late vision. Respectable effort. 7/10 2007 "Diary of the Dead" - Interesting, but something I can't watch over and over again like the rest. 6/10 I saw somewhere on YouTube, a hardcore zombie fan. Who sought out to buy every movie ever made with the word "dead" in it. Lol, that's my kind of people. If there's a title I didn't include, it's most likely because it sucked, lol. There hasn't been a good zombie movie made in the same realm and feel of Romero's kind of zombies. A bunch of fast-running or no-plotted zombie movies if you ask me. I do like stuff like "Fido" and "Overlord." It's entertaining to say the least, same with the "Resident Evil" movies. "28 Days Later" is a beautiful film, but I know, not zombies. But I like reading the stories about people like writer Stephen King, buying a film reel of 28 Days Later, watching and rewinding this movie over and over again in his private theater. Nothing is better to me still than a zombie movie, when done right! Favorite gifs included.

George A Romero's 'Dawn of the Dead' 1/10? It's the greatest film of all time. I'm going to have to seek therapy for shock and PTSD after seeing that rating and the ratings for some of the other classics. To each their own though.

1) How can I know if I like or dislike something until I watch it? 2) I gave a bunch of them positive ratings, including the very first one. 3) Now why is it you get to say all that, but when I criticize these movies, I'm being "harsh"? 4) Plenty of directors who are 65+ are still doing solid work. Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, etc... 5) As a matter of fact, Nic has appeared in JOE, MANDY, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE and COLOR OUT OF SPACE. Also, he's only 56. His decline happened for other reasons. 6) When you phrase it like that, it sounds like you recognize bad movies when you see them but you're willing to forgive them. I hope I misinterpreted that, because that would be very unfair. 7) I don't know what gave you the impression that I expectations (high or low) before watching this franchise and that they affected my ratings, because that wasn't the case.

My ranking of what I’ve seen would look like this:
Dawn of the Dead 78 Night of the Living Dead 68 Dawn of the Dead 04 Day of the Dead 85 Night of the Living Dead 90 Land of the Dead Diary of the Dead Survival of the Dead
Even if I don’t count it, Return of the Living Dead would go between Day and the Night remake.

Thanks for rating the original Dawn of the Dead a 1/10. Now I know I can automatically disregard all future opinions from you.
