Fodor's travel service has posted the article below. It covers the dire situation facing the restaurant industry during Covid-19 closures. It follows with a few things that the NRA -- National RESTAURANT Association -- suggests the public can do to help to alleviate some the problem. One thing that they suggest is buying Gift Cards from restaurants, that will appreciate in value, following the pandemic. That, however, follows the report on the grim state of certain closures, and possible closures. So, that might be an "iffy" investment. www.fodors.com/news/coronavirus/the-restaurant-apocalypse-has-arrived-heres-how-you-can-help

Yes. I'm afraid that's likely the case.
I've been thinking about this, since I read it, this morning. There are restaurants in my neighborhood from which I can order for pick-up. But, going to the restaurant with friends, is a huge part of the experience.
So far, during lock down, I have only ordered pizzas from two nearby places. They're both close, so I've done pick-up. But, that's not out of the ordinary. I've been doing it, occasionally, long before Covid.
Tonight, I'm going to have a burger. I suppose that I could order from a neighborhood place. But, I pre-make patties for freezing, and I prefer my own burgers.
It IS sad.

In one case, I traveled there only to find the place empty.

Now I will preface this by saying, continue to support in any way you can. As a bakery, plus my nephew working a long time for one of the top restauranteurs in our area-gift cards don't do as much as some may think. And carryout only pays the immediate small bills. Gift cards, give money now, but at some point they will come back down the line-when many won't be around or are still not doing good. Plus unfortunately there are those who will want their money back(not kidding). Carryouts are good, but keep in mind that so much was done in large groups, liquor sales, & those extra packaging supplies-sheesh they cost a bundle in contrast to washing regular plates/cutlery. This accounts for increases in how much your ordering out will entail, not to mention the costs of ingredients has gone up for us. Please, please remember to support local. This will having a long impact on businesses, even into the next year & beyond.

Sweetpea, it's good to hear from someone who knows the struggles, first hand. Thanks for adding your thoughts.
I'm thinking of going the "extra mile," and buying a few gift cards from neighborhood places. As I said, and you confirmed, it's "iffy." But, I figure that I'm cooking at home all the time, now ... except for a few pizzas ... so, I think I should put "thank you" money, from what I haven't been spending in restaurants, and hope that it can help.

I have heard that many property owners are trying to help, an empty building etc
But the restaurant industry is so tough. An owner/chef can not work 18-20hrs a day if they are closed. Let alone meet rent and payroll.

Let alone meet rent and payroll. Some are and some aren't. If the property owners were able to get PPP loans to cover their debt service obligations on the property, or otherwise were able to take advantage of amnesty periods from their mortgage lenders, then they can work things out with the tenants more easily. But not all of them were able to do that, and others are just unscrupulous pricks. I have clients that are commercial landlords, and others that are commercial tenants, and over the past few months, they've all run the gamut of being commercially reasonable and being on the exact opposite end of the spectrum. It's a really tough situation for all involved, but it's only compounded by people being unreasonable.
