Which do you prefer? I often hear the terms used interchangeably, though from my understanding New Wave seems to be more associated with more pop oriented music (Blondie, Go Gos, the Cars), post punk seems to be more associted with more "artsy" type music (Joy Division, Sioxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke)

Post punk & new wave (the British definition) were as far as I see pretty much the same thing. The US definition seemed to include a broader spectrum of music & styles including bands that were called New Romantic, synth pop, pop etc over in the UK.
